New Salary Cap Rules

Postby Wedgie » Sat Sep 09, 2006 3:16 am

As of November SANFL clubs will cop fines of up to 100k.

But the salary cap has increased from 305k to 340k and there will be 3 more increases to keep up with inflation.
(It'll be 360k in 2009)

Deliberate cheats will be excluded from recruiting outside of their metropolitan and country zone also.

There will also be a new clause for players who have been at a club for 10 years which means a lesser amount will be used to calculate that player's salary towards the salary cap.

There will be no rule like in WA that will exclude any amount of players coming from interstate though but this will be reviewed in 3 years time.

Here's a link to Doug Robertson's story in the Advertiser about the new rules:

i like the clause thats like a 'veterans list' thing where guys at the club for a long time count less against the cap altho i think it should be reduced from 10 to 7 years i reckon as in this day and age not many players are around for that long...

Does the 10years begin with U17s? If so its a great idea to keep the player developed from going into country leagues with a little bit more $$$$.

10 years is a bit much for the SANFL in my opinion. How many players running around now were around in 96-97? I counted 8. It might promote clubs keeping their players but most of the time its not up to them and its the players looking elsewhere for more money

MEDIA RELEASE
SANFL SALARY CAP REGULATIONS

After many months of discussion and deliberation, The South Australian Football
Commission has approved new Salary Cap Regulations which will become fully effective on
1 November 2006.

The new Regulations come as a result of a total review of the existing Salary Cap Regulations which
were first adopted in 1998. In reviewing the old Regulations consideration was given to the Salary Cap
Regulations applicable both in the AFL and in other codes.

The new Regulations reflect the current needs and changing requirements of Salary Cap issues and have
been strengthened to give wider investigative powers and the provision of significantly increased
penalties for a breach of Regulations by Clubs, Officials and Players.

A highlight of the new Regulations is the appointment of an independent Salary Cap Investigation
Committee which has been established to review and investigate Salary Cap issues. It has been given
wide powers of investigation and is obliged to report its findings direct to the Football Commission.
The Members of this new committee are Mr Don Shammall – Chartered Accountant, having wide
experience in forensic accounting issues, Mr Geoff Parsons, a Chartered Accountant having had vast
experience in general commercial matters and Mr Wally Miller, who has been involved in the
administration of football at Club, League and AFL level for many years. All of these gentlemen have
had long associations with football and the Commission believes that they have the experience to
effectively carry out the duties that have been given to them.

The Commission has also revised the SANFL Player Salary Cap quantum after considering the requests of
the Clubs, the fact that the Cap has not moved to accommodate inflationary pressures since its last
determination in 2000 and the ability of all Clubs to absorb the set increases over the next three years.

The Salary Cap applicable to League Clubs for the next three (3) seasons is as follows:-
1.1 2007 season - $340,000.00
1.2 2008 season - $350,000.00
1.3 2009 season - $360,000.00

SANFL President and Chairman of the SA Football Commission, Rod Payze considers the new Regulations
to be one of the key foundations of the SANFL competition. “The SA Football Commission is strongly
committed to ensuring the integrity of the SANFL Salary Cap. These new regulations reflect that
commitment and will greatly assist us in making sure our clubs compete on a level playing field in the
area of player payments.”
