ALTERATIONS TO SANFL FINALS MATCH COMMENCEMENT TIMES
At the request of Club General Managers today, the SANFL wishes to advise time changes to the commencement of matches being played during the 2006 SANFL ‘be active’ Finals Series. These changes will take effect as of Sunday 17th September.

Amended match times will occur as follows –
Under 17’s 2nd Semi Final – Commencement Time 9.15am
League Elimination Final – Commencement Time 12.05pm
League Qualifying Final – Commencement Time 3.10pm

A compulsory siren at 11.55am will conclude the Under 17’s match to ensure the League Elimination Final commences on time at 12.05pm.
Please note that if either League match is drawn at the end of full time, a tie breaker will be played.
The amendments to match times allow ample time to play the League Qualifying Final, commencing at 3.10pm, under normal playing conditions.

I wonder if this gets rid of (or just makes it less likely) the potentially ridiculous situation that the cut throat final each week could be cut short if it doesn't look like it will end on time. A great question asked by 5RPH this morning to Rod Payze certainly made me understand that at half time of the first game the SANFL look at how much times is left before the 2nd game starts, takes off the 6 mins for 3/4 time and divides the result in 2 to work out how much the quarters are.

I cannot belive a cut throat final could be cut short, for eg if earlier this year the North v Glenelg game at Glenelg (2nd one) was only decided in the last 2 mins, if it was a final it could have potentially had a different result. How pathetic does this rule make the SANFL look?

The matches should start at 9, 12 and 3.

They way I figure if that any match goes over time, then stiff. Play the match out in full, including extra time, then if the other games start later then so be it.

Ironically, this helped North to a Reserves Flag last year.

YEAH it screwed glenelg last year but it probably helped us on sat against SOUTH as they charged home kicking around 7 goals in the last 1/4 and the siren went at the 28 minute mark.[/quote]

Because they think that it's cool by having it on Sunday. They had the Eagles v Sturt u19s game moved from Woodville to Glenelg and start the game at 9am.

What is meant by "tie breaker"? A whole new game? Or 2x5 minute "quarters"? The second option (which I thought was the case for all finals except the Granny) would ruin the SANFL's precious schedule if South and Port drew.

Stupid rule,

As stated before probably helped North reserves last year. Watched south and glenelg on the weekend in the reserves and most 1/4's went for around the 32 minute mark, south were charging home in the last quater kicked 6 or 7 down by nine points and the siren went at the 26/27min mark. What if this game decide who got into the finals etc like it may have cost the bays the other year.

Like others have mentioned why not start the games earlier, is it that hard?

I can half (but reluctantly) accept this rule for reserves but to think that a League cut throat final could be decided by this rule is just beyond belief in my eyes.

Also the question that has to be asked also is:

If the Qualifying Final is tied it goes to extra time, we know that.
What if the Elimination final is tied at the end of the alotted time?
I would assume that since it can't go past the allotted time that extra time couldn't be played?
Are the timekeepers perhaps instructed just to blow the siren after the next score is scored?

The way I read it, the 17's game was the only one with a set finish time. The two league games will be decided by paper-rock-scissors, apparently.

Mr Payze from the SANFL made it quite clear on 5RPH yesterday that the Elim and 1st semi will go to a set time.

Fair enough. Might have to have sudden death paper-rock-scissors instead of best of 3.

I agree with most here, rediculous that a league game of any ilk, let alone a final, could be decided by anything other than a full game followed by extra time if required.

Actually this probably has all got to do with the ABC, seeing what they did on Saturday, even though the game started 5 minutes earlier just for them.

I'd like to see them cut off their broadcasting if the QF went into extra time.
