West sign Peter Walsh

Postby redandblack » Thu Nov 02, 2006 4:10 pm

Westies website has announced the signing of Peter Walsh for 3 years.

Peter will have an assistant coaching role also and will do some promotions and development work at the Club.

Great news for Bloods fans.

Perhaps just the start.

Pressure? what pressure Tassie, the weed has Burg, Simmo and Walsh as assistants. Add to this a new CEO who has coached 'a bit" and a new football department GM.

Then take into account the split between supporters is probably 50-50. Then consider has he the full support of the committee???????????

Pressure is a very "light on" statement I would think. Weed needs improve on his win/loss ratio, last season as senior coach, previous two at reserves. Win the first two will just about DOUBLE his average.

Good to see such wholehearted support of Weed from one of his biggest fans on such a good-news day for the Club.

As for both Simmo and Burg being assistant coaches, better check your facts.

If there was an award for the "Most Proactive SANFL Club in Off-Season", there would be no need for a count - West hands down. A magnificent example to the rest of the competition for how they are doing things on AND off-field at the moment. Early favorites to go top four.

Bit of sweeping statement there? Why because they choose to name 4 recruits in one release and a couple of other like Walsh previously? You don't think any other club is being pro-active??? Top 4 is a big call but it can be done - North went from bottom to top 4 in 2004 but had a signifanctly better list than what West presently has including it's new recruits.

Let's face it West had to replace a number of off field positions including administrators and assistant coaches because of how poorly the club has done. I would say it was necessity not pro-activity. All clubs have made or will make some some changes off field and all will recruit - many have already got players lined up but are awating the AFL draft before any announcements are made. I think the club making the most "strides" off season is Sturt. New coaches, new Football Manager, signed the deal with the Castle Tavern and I believe they have some decent recruits lined up.

After having Doug there for 100 years anything was going to see proactive.

I have no doubts Westie's whole setup will improve now but it remains to be seen how quickly it will occur but IMHO they're definately on the right track which is a good start. Very impressed with the sort of recruits they're brining in.

West Adelaide are also talking to a former top grade basketball coach about an off-field role. Not sure if anything will eventuate, but interesting to see they are thinking 'outside the square'.

Interesting subject. I remember hearing Ken Cole speak a few times and thought wow, this guy is such a natural motivator, put the right assistants with him and he would be a successful football coach.

I have always been a believer that the senior coach needs be a motivator above all else.

I dont know if the rumour has any legs, but it is an interesting concept.
