Mini Draft 2006

7 I/S players to the Crows/Power, we (Roosters) get last pick (at this stage), or the 1 that "no-one wants"!

Dude, no use in saying North will get the last pick, traditionally at least another 5 or 6 will be added to it going on recent years.
Should be good for Sturt, West and Norwood as I can see them getting 2 each.

Eagles and Central didn't get a pick last year. Didn't need it... When are the rest of you gonna catch up...

West: Travis Boak. Obviously the best available talent however Tippett would interest them as they lack scoring options.

Sturt: Kurt Tippett. You would assume the Blues take him as he is the next best available and a big strong forward.

Norwood: David MacKay- With the loss of James and Carslake a year older we need another midfielder. He’s a quick wingman which would be good.

Glenelg: Nathan Krakouer- Speedy midfielder and they need more pace in the engine room.

That’s how I see the first four selections panning out.

Hope your right macca, even three more interstaters will give westies pick 1 and 10 give us two more recruits at the subsidised price

West have a real need for a ruckman or key forward, but have plenty of on-ballers with what they've recruited.

I think Tippett would be our first pick, as he fits the bill and we'd be likely to have him all year (and possibly next) and he's a little older than the other young draftees, although you'd have to look at Rodan. Boak may well take a similar track to Douglas last year.

I think:

West - Tippett

Sturt - Rodan

then see what happens.

Why is poor performance rewarded by the SANFL mini draft. Why not a lottery or a rotation basis ?

It used to be run on a rotation basis but didnt work, for eg if there were 9 draftees every year the same club was getting the first pick every year no matter where they finished on the table and the same club was receiving the last pick every year no matter where they finished on the table.
Under the rotation policy the premiership side could potentially receive the no 1 draft pick every year and the wooden spooner could potentially receive the last draft pick every year. Hence why it failed.
Its better the way it is, a lottery system might not be too bad but you'll find that the top teams aren't that keen on a draft pick anyway.
Central and Eagles don't need them, I know North were willing to be the first club to "pass" last year until Lonie unexpectedly came up.
I can see a "pass" happening in the near future.
Personally I'd like to see some sort of system which gives the better/more draft picks to the club that loses more players i/s and gives less/none/weaker picks to those lucky enough to keep players in SA.

I like that suggestion. Perhaps weighted by the draft selection number and if it a local or interstate AFL club.

Hard one

Postby dash61 » Mon Nov 27, 2006 10:30 am

Its not an easy question to answer, as with the afl, you REWARD POOR PERFORMANCE to try and help the clubs who are on the bottom of the tables, ask a team that loses 6 or 7 players to the draft like westies did in 2003 and you will get a different answer.

The system in place now is probably the fairest, the richer clubs on the northern side of town can pay their way out of trouble but for the sturts, norwoods & lesser degree westies, the reward of a mini draft pick does help playing stocks should the player be with you for a couple of seasons and then progress onto the big league.

This draft itself is a gamble as with Lonie at Norths last year, who would have predicted him playing nearly a full season of AFL football. Who would have thought suck a lightly built lad like Richard Douglas would come on as quick as he did. So the mini draft is a gamble and you have to be lucky.

I think them mini draft should factor in which sides have players taken by the draft as well as ladder position.

Clubs should not rely on the mini draft to boost their teams performance, simple as that.

If you are relying on the mini draft picks then you are not concentraring on your juniors.

Honestly for example can you say that of all those drafted by the crows and Paps last Saturday that they are better than the following

Eags: Cicca,Powell,Jarrad,McKenzie

Centrals: Gowans,Slade

Sturt : Sheedy, Chambers

Etc,etc

They are kids and are there for the fuure of the Crows and Power

I honestly think that there are 20 players in the SANFL that are better than the bottom 5 on the Crows and Powers lists

Hell Cicca would carve up Jericho

Devising an equation, and adding in as a factor # of players lost to the draft (on top of ladder placing) would be pretty complex for what is a relatively small and simple operation.

Not too fussed about the 'rewarding poor performance' angle. The mini-draft is generally for one player (two at most) per club, and they tend to be young, very many will not be automatic SANFL league selections (at least in their first year). I think that SANFL clubs view the mini-draft as a nice bonus rather than something they're relying on. If that player boosts their club's performance, well and good. The SA clubs are not going to get so obsessed by each mini-draft player so as to just plain old forget their juniors.

Too right. I really like the mini draft and I agree that the bottom team should have the first selection. There aren't as many ways of evening up the competition in the SANFL as there are in the AFL; the mini draft is one of the few.

And there is a certain amount of risk with each selection. I mean Westies took Bonaddio with the 1st pick last year and we all know how that turned out, not good for the Bloods! IMO the two best players taken last year were Douglas and Thomas.

Why not just ask the players where they would like to play?
