Travelling Footballers

Postby CENTURION » Mon Jun 12, 2006 10:44 am

Just reading the paper this morning & noticed that Ciccolella drives straight past Elizabeth on his 130km trip to work & it also mentions that Ryan Viney was travelling from work in Tanunda to play/train for South at Noarlunga. Surely, players such as these would have to be targeted as potential recruits to Central, especially when you consider the lure of playing in such a successful side!

Mike Redden travelled a long way as well, why didn't he play for the dogs?

I recall stories of Rick Davies and Trevor Sims travelling a long way each week to play for Sturt.

These players may drive straight past Elizabeth that doesnt mean the area that they live in is "Centrals Area" to play for the clubs they play for they must either live in their teams ZONE or not be wanted by the team whose zone it is they live in and From memory Cica lives in WWT zone .

Cicolella is from Port Wakefield I think? The gateway to the Yorke Peninsula which is WWT zone. Not sure if he still lives there now. Plenty of YP players playing for the Eagles at the moment including Westbrook and Skipworth.

What I was getting at was if it is such an imposition to drive that far, why not play for a club that is closer, or get a job closer! We don't need the little prick, anyway!

He doesn't drive past Elizabeth - more like Virginia and Two Wells.

I know they spent some time living in Adelaide, but I'd imagine the Maynard (Rodney and Brenton) boys did a bit of travelling throughout their SANFL careers

It's estimated that Mick Redden travelled 260,000 kms during his playing days at North Adelaide.

The late Brendon Howard use to travel from Port MacDonnell in the states South East to play every week and as far as I'm aware he also used to train at least once a week after the long trek as well as having worked from sparrow's fart in the morning pulling up craypots!!!!

Sturtpeter or someone else may be able to verify this one but I'm pretty sure this was the case.

I used to get up in the morning at 10.00 o'clock at night & go & work down mine for 30 hours, come home & drink cup of sulphuric acid & dad would slash us to death with a broken beer bottle & dance on our graves whilst singing Hallelulaj! Tell the youth of today that & they won't believe a word of it!
