Eagles 14.13 d. Norwood 11.10
WOODVILLE-West Torrens' penchant for Coopers Stadium continued last night when it overcame a goalless third quarter to hold off a sluggish Norwood by 21 points.
After racing out to a 17-point lead at quarter-time on the back of seven goals, the Eagles looked ready to extend their winning streak over the Redlegs to nine and its record at Coopers Stadium to 11-6 with an element of ease.
But it gave their visiting fans false hope of an easy ride as, for the next two terms, Ron Fuller's men could muster just two goals - to Tim Inkster and James Vandeleur - in more than 55 minutes.
With just a six-point buffer at the final change, the Eagles suddenly sprung to life when Mark Passador booted his third goal.
It sparked a match-winning final-term run of three goals in four minutes, with skilful wingman Luke Jarrad putting the game on ice with a stunning left-foot kick so close to the boundary line it looked like he was on Coopers Hill. And when reliable defender Joe Pedler, in his 90th match, booted his first goal in league football 19 minutes into the final quarter, his team-mates had every reason to celebrate by swarming around the club favourite.
While it took the Eagles longer than first thought to finish off their rivals, they certainly had the better players for the duration of the night with giant ruckman Paul Lindsay leading the way with a staggering 48 hit-outs.
In conditions more suited to the mosquito fleet, Lindsay reigned supreme at the stoppages and around the ground with his 16 possessions and four tackles adding to his personal hit-out tally which was four-times that of Norwood's John Meesen.
Lindsay's influence gave Tim Inkster - who was again at his creative best - skipper Gavin Colville, and Justin Cicolella plenty of opportunity to gain the upper hand through the middle and with Jarrad and Leigh Treeby off the wings, they were unstoppable.
Mark McKenzie was his versatile self by not only marshalling the back six but also ensuring youngster Adam Cockshell was kept quiet while North recruit Adam Grocke, who was used up forward and in defence, had arguably his best game for the club.
With several of Norwood's midfield stars quelled, the load fell onto the broad shoulders of Heath Culpitt, who toiled manfully. But until coach Trevor Hill can find a consistent goalscorer up forward, his team will struggle against the front-runners.
