I can't get into soccer. I appreciate the skills, but I can't understand why, in a game where scoring is almost impossible, that all a player has to do is fall over in the box and he gets a free shot at goal. Thank God it's over, now we can get on with a REAL sport ... SANFL footy!!!!

Two games last night.

One decided on a dive in the penalty box, the other decided on penalties.

"The beautiful game"? Give me a break.

Like all games, there are flashes of brilliance, but you have to wait a long time for them.

PS: I'd like to see how their skills stand up with Byron Pickett charging at them.

Very boring sport (although i find rugby league extremely boring too).

I watched most of the game last night, and all i could do was think "when are they actually going to score a goal!!". And the whole time i'm thinking of ways they can increase the likelihood of goals being scored - less players on the field, bigger goal area, remove the "off side" rule......

I've been following soccer since 1978 but didn't even get 1/50th as excited last night as I did by North's wins on Friday.
Soccer's had its 2 weeks in 4 years in the sun, back to normal and play on now.

not all sports have to have constant scoring, a 0-0 game can still be extremly entertaining, and alot of the time is.

I can see where you're coming from as obviously you've grown up with soccer.

I've only ever really followed aussie rules (of the footy codes) and with the constant scoring its hard to get out of the mentality of high scoring being required. I do admire the skills in soccer, it just becomes frustrating that there isnt much scoring.

actually no  i've grown up with SANFL, parents were taking me to games before i was 2, always played Aussie Rules. Theres just always been somthing about round ball Football that i have always liked, so i have always watched the English Premier League games up late on SBS, and more recently Adelaide City and United. it seems the more ''soccer'' i watch and go to, the more boring i find Aussie Rules, dont get me wrong i still love the game and will always attend the SANFL, but i just really find ''soccer'' more appealing, dont know why, i spose you just either love it or you dont.

I think that is why soccer doesn't appeal to the average Aussie bloke, we love to "score" and can identify with sports with a lot of "scoring", even though soccer has a lot of Oxford St style "scoring" whenever a goal is scored.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I just can't come to grips with the Hawthorn-style of play. You know, going forward but, wait, nowhere to go so we go backwards & across & back again.

I enjoy soccer and can sit trhough any match, no matter what the scoreline. But what happened this morning is exactly why Soccer will never take off and become a big phenomenon in Australia.

Any sport that promotes faking/acting/diving/cheating will put people off. Matches being decided because of blatant wrong decisions becuase of faking/acting/diving/cheating will put more people off.

We may complain about our umpires a lot...but they are 10 times better than the deplorable bunch of alledged world class referees that have been officiating in the World Cup.

They need a 3rd umpire & adjudicate if the penalty was warranted or not. If not, free kick to the opposition from the 1/2 way mark, or even a penalty. That would stop the diving!

Spot on. To have so much of the ball and have the game torn away in the last minute is bitterly difficult to deal with.

Nonetheless we can all be extremely proud of the boys to get so close to something noone in the world would even consider. Well done boys.

But come on the Dogs in the games that matter!!!

On top of the Italy/Australia furore/debacle/sham, Switzerland
were eliminated WITHOUT CONCEDING A GOAL!!!!
People can now hop off the Murdoch Media inspired bandwagon
and enjoy scoring, courage and skill in their footy.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

The thing I've enjoyed most about the World Cup has been appreciating the different styles of each team. Some attacking, some defensive, some pretty, some brutal. The way AFL is going, the idea of a team being defined by its style and flair will be a thing of the past. Pretty much every game's the same.
"A no vote from any club means there is some sort of risk involved in our entry into the competition not working," Steven Trigg.

One of the arts of playing Aussie Rules is playing for free kicks ... It's always been around and probably always will be, and seems more accepted than in soccer, I guess perhaps because of the enormity of benefit a free-kick or penalty can have in a sport where being scoreless is not a surprise.

Is difficult to compare Ref's against Umpires because of this ... But I think FIFA need to ensure they have men "Strong in Character" calling the shots in Soccer so they make the correct decisions and don't waiver in the heat of the moment ... Same could be said for many of our SANFL or AFL ump's I think.
