SANFL print coverage ... what extra stuff should be covered?

Postby PhilH » Sat Jan 22, 2011 11:24 am

I enjoyed reading through some old Football Budgets and Football Times from the 1980's last week.

Made me think of the publications and coverage the SANFL received then and what we read now.

As an example (not a criticism) The Advertiser on Friday's used to have a full preview of all five games, now on a Friday its the team selection changes and one feature article.

The Footy Times used to have columnists covering various issues in the league plus a section on the SAFA, Amateurs, Country and Interstate. And who could forget the "Eagle Eye".

The Budget used to have There were also a lot more SANFL based competitions...... loved the old Hughes & Loveday voucher for a SANFL club sports bag.

Of course its all a lot more glossy and electronic (ie Local Footy SA) these days

So throwing it out there ... what print coverage would you like to see brought back to the SANFL?

Agree about an article-per-game for previews.
Would also like to see scores from the WAFL back in Monday's paper.
Used to like the Looking Back in the Budgets.

These will continue in "Sportsbeat" this season, as they have for the last five years, each Friday.

I'd like to see Ken McGregor write some articles about SANFL.

He actually knows something about it.

I'm realistically happy enough with what we have. We get a lot of the important announcements, and some good previews, write ups and stats in the Advertiser/Sunday mail. If there was more I'd only really read Centrals stuff, and even then I really only enjoy reading about how good we are. So, unless they're going to write nice Centrals stuff after we've had a good win I have enough. And if they started catering for that, we're going to need a 24 page liftout every week. Lol.

McGregor's Glenelg's Forward line Coach this year, so this may reduce his ability to watch other games.

He may also be restricted to give an honest perspective though (for fear of criticsms to come back and bite him on the bum, either by it being taken notice of and helping a team beat us, or commenting on where Glenelg could improve ;)

But I agree, he should be given an opportunity to write on a sport he knows inside and out, and he would definately be more focussed on SANFL being involved himself.

I thought The Advertiser/Messenger coverage was generally good last year. Thought the Football Budget went down hill to the point more often than not I wouldn't buy it.

I like reading descriptions of the games and journalists thoughts on match winning moves/plays etc. Also like the coaches and players thoughts on where the game was won and lost.

Would like to see more in depth articles on the previews as well as opposed to just the standard who is in and who is out of the team followed by tips. This is something the Budget could do as well.

No thanks, we already have one Assistant coach from another club that struggles to be impartial....

Ken is doing mainstream news, therefore I dare say he has little interest in covering sport

Then why was he at the TDU today with note pad in hand and a photographer following him......

On gripe I have with the coverage is the amount of space given to put all the information in. give the match reports some decent space

Another suggestion would be articles of a historical nature including humourous ones like PhilH/s recollections of the "Just XXXX win Woodville Banner incident" which made for quite interesting readling / reminiscing on this site!

Have a chat to the fitness and rehab people at footy clubs. I'd be interested in that kind of info.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

For those people interested, and who weren't aware - the Advertiser SANFL liftout was in today's edition.

EDIT - half the liftout is for AFL; half is for SANFL.

Is there still a print media ? Never buy a paper these days, all electronic now.
Only reason I ever bought a paper was to see what was written about Norwood or Kensington BC in the summer .... now no reason to buy.

The SANFL need to look at the WAFL budget.
Major quality difference.... one is a waste of three bucks the other is given FREE to all paying spectators.

As for the print media..... we just have to accept little will change. Would be good if the Budget took the initiative and became an SANFL mag with match previews and possible lineups (like the footy record) and any other news from aropund the traps. Imagine the SANFL cornering its own market!

Would be good if the budget put in good historial articles. Not piffle but some good stuff about the past with some stats.

Less print coverage wouldn't worry me as its awful anyway. The only media I worry about for SANFL coverage is this site and rocketrooster.com.
