Glenelg and Metcalf

Postby HOORAY PUNT » Sat Aug 20, 2011 10:07 pm

I seem to recall Glenelgs Gary Metcalf say upon sacking Mark Mickan that they were about 2011 and 2012 meaning he thought a change of coach would reap rewards .With todays thumping and players looking not interested and Massie with no answers, Gary and his board may have got this terribly wrong .Should he go or has he done the right thing by the club ?He has clearly divided the supporters of the club .

They finally got back into finals action after years of nothing and if don't act now I feel they won't be long from being a struggling club again and from a competition point of view that would be disappointing.

It is very clear that Kris Massie is not ready for senior coaching. Structures are absolutely appalling and that's just the beginning. I only saw the second half today but Bays were shameful.

It's clear to me and everyone I know that the whole Glenelg Board must go, not just Metcalf. Sacking Mickan could well be one of the biggest errors ever made down at Brighton Road

LOL HP, how's your backyard going?

Shall we start a new topic ... Strt and the Wooden Spoon?

Isn't it great that the Bays can have an absolute stinker of a season and still be 4th?

Glenelg will still make finals even if they dont win another game.
Port would have to beat either of Centrals or the Eagles to get in, cant see that happening.
Cant see South winning another game
Cant see North winning all 3
So on that basis Glenelg should limp into 5th.

Certainly no improvement, as promised by Metcalf, though.

Mickan was sacked while Bays were sitting 5th. Massie took over and has not had to coach a game against Norwood or Centrals and been thrashed several times. Very obvious that he lacks in several areas of coaching. Even if they finish 5th, you can hardly say that Massie has taken them forward. If anything, they've gone backward in many areas.

We all know it takes time to change a list, a list Mickan created, so while he is no longer there he still is a reason for performances like today.

You've got to be kidding. Mickan created one of the best lists in the competition and he did the same with us at the Eagles.

I remember hearing Metcalf say on 5AA that Massie would take the club forward in the second half of this season. Cornes had commented about letting Mickan finish his contract but Metcalf said the Bays were here for 2011 not 2012 etc? That hasn't happened so how can Mickan's sacking be justified, particulary as he he still had the full support of the players.

Errr, hate to spoil the party but the season isn't over yet.

Might be a good idea to wait until then before writing obituaries.

Westies showed after today that they are still in the hunt for 5th place.

Would have been interesting veiwing for any applicant of the Bays coaching gig had they been watching the game today.

All finals contenders sides except possibly Norwood & North have put in a 'Dead Set Shocker" at some stage this season and this was Glenelg's 2nd.

Remember
- Central kicking just 4 goals in Rd 2 v West
- Eagles smashed by Sturt by 80+ points Adelaide Oval under lights
- Glenelg almost beaten by 100 by Central at Eliz
- Port being beaten by 100 by Norwood
- South have suffered big losses to Norwoood and Central
- West v Eagles a few weeks back.

ie it's one game .... yes a BIG game but one game just the same.

Yes but only one club sacked their coach over it ;) ... and they were sitting in a finals spot at the time ... and with a good run home in the minor round, without having to play Centrals or Norwood until finals.

Mickan didnt give kids a chance, until this year, too late.

Did he deliver a flag with this so called "best list"?

We wont know if this decision was the right one for a couple of years IMO

Just on Metcalf, is it just me or is he trying to be the Kris Grant of the SANFL without the success of club stability? At least Krazy Kris sorted his own mess out before making outlandish statements about the SANFL or trying to become the leader of the SANFL clubs......

come on dedj, what more do you expect from this person. careful he will demand a tutorial and full explanation from you should you make any statement in regards to anything you saw or read, and then accuse you of personal abuse and then if you respond it just keeps going ad nauseum - a bit like a dog chasing its tail
