GF Crowd of 25,130

Postby Wedgie » Mon Oct 09, 2006 10:23 am

Just wondering what people's thoughts were on the crowd yesterday?
I can honestly say that out of the 20 to 30 people I stood with yesterday not one had to pay for their ticket, there must have been 1000s and 1000s of freebies given away not to mention the fact that members get in for free as well.
Of the 25,130 I'd say that half would have probably paid.
Also add to the fact there were 6 different clubs all playing yesterday.
Its pretty ordinary when you put it into that sort of perspective.

Our club got 50 free tickets for winning a premiership this year so i assume all clubs that won an A grade flag would have got the same.

Damn, and I paid for my tickets! All the group I was with did.
It's the real supporters who have to pay when they try to entice others into the ground.

Crowd looked okay to me, still dont understand why people were up in the big north stand though. Looked bigger crowd than what Port Power gets to games.

Every year there seems to be a big deal about the free tickets given out. To me, who really cares. Its never going to be a huge money making excercise for the SANFL. I have to say there were not many North or Norwood supproters there for the reserves, a few Port fans for the under 19's.

All in all given the teams playing it wasn't a bad crowd. I thought there was plenty of atmosphere as well.

I wasn't making a big deal about the freebies, I have no problems with the SANFL giving away tickets to make the crowd larger, its smart if anything, I was just trying to put a realistic figure on paying customers.
Agreed about the ressies crowd, there was a lot more North and Glenelg supporters there last year.
Norths crowd would have been about 30-40% of last years effort.
I think the combination of the "been there done that" factor, the league only losing just last week and bathurst being on made a fair difference though.
I wonder if not having it on a long weekend helped or hindered the crowd? Also the fact it was right in the middle of school holidays?

I have no idea why they opened up the Northern stand - unless the weather is looking dicey why bother?

same goes for Power games

You'd most likely be right on Bathurst. After all Centrals = Elizabeth which in turn = Holden, so I suspect a fair few of them would've watched the races instead and there mightn't have been as many Centrals fans as in previous years. But that's my (very wild) guess.

Why not just make the admission $8 all year for every game including the GF. They advertise this heavily during the season and with all the free tickets given out anyway, it's not like they would be looking to make huge profits out of the games.

$9 for finals and $22 for the Grand Finals is still good value, but I bet many people who are looking for something to do will prefer to pay $14 to go watch the movies or something, and it's these type of people that will increase the attendance unless two of Port, Norwood or Central are playing in the Grand Final.

As much as I like to have the GF at AAMI, I'm starting to think that it should be at Adelaide Oval.
WOOOOO, Premiers 1993, 2006 and 2011!
Eagles - P 528 W 320 L 205 D 3 W% 60.89
WFC - P 575 W 160 L 411 D 4 W% 28.17
WTFC - P 1568 W 702 L 841 D 25 W% 45.56
Total - P 2671 W 1183 L 1457 D 32 W% 44.88

I thought the atmosphere yesterday was pretty good ... With a North, Port, South emerging as legitimate outfits to contest one of these in the next season or two the numbers should be further improved, so I'd keep it at AAMI for the time being...

The emerging South will improve GF numbers
If the Eagles, South or West are in the GF then Adelaide oval is the best option but if any of the other clubs face each other then you will get 35+ and therefor you must play at Footy Pk

The biggest fear of the sanfl must be an Eagles v South GF next season!
Infact this game could be played at Unley which can cater well for a crowd of around 7 to 8 thousand!

I don't think the Home and Away attendance would back this up, but I reakon South in a GF would boost numbers (from recent years) .. As Wedgie pointed out in a post somewhere this years crowd was about 8,000 down on the first GF meeting of these two teams back in 2000, I would imagine as a result of the one sided nature of these games - To be honest if the Dogs and Eagles were to get through again next year you would expect the crowd to be greater than yesterdays, so I can see next years crowd being larger than this years nearly anyway you look at it.
