does anyone agree that in the last 2 games eagles have lacked in this area. a area in which we dominated last year.

I wouldn't be concerned about the Eagles just yet schimma. Without knowing the actual goings-on at Oval Ave, I would assume that older players are on staggered pre-seasons with an aim to making it to October again, rather than burning out in July/August. Give them time and you will see them up the top again.

They seemed to have plenty of both in Round 1.

After game 3 last year, we were 1 win and 2 losses and still won the flag.

From the three games ive seen this year ill make the following observations

1. The defence isn't settled , Schwarze still needs to find his niche and dare i say it adjust to Sanfl. There isn't going to be the two blokes behind the play to give the easy lay off , he is going to have to be the creater.

2. With the inclusion of Schwarze , Maca seems to be in the midddle , down back , in the centre ...... not settled

3. Getting killed at the centre , even though Lindsay dominant in the ruck , need to either kill the ball or forget roving the tap every bounce and just thump it forward.

4. Lot of youngsters in the side that need time again .. this can't be helped and will in the end add to our depth.

All in all still confident we will be around the mark.

Central on Wednesday were one of the most cohesive units ive seen in the last 3 years , back to the form of 2004 , 2005. Extremely impressed with their work rate and hardness.

I think we can match it , just need time to adjust and get working as a team .
If at first you don't succeed , then destroy all evidence that you tried in the first place

Excellent post, I agree completely with all you have said there. I'm not so worried about the Eagles at this stage - it's more that other teams have improved (I think Port, North and South will eventually improve on last year as well) and in particular how good Central are (again). The challenge is there to improve on last year because we will need to to be up there again.

Agree with what you have said .
Schwarze is not settled someone posted elsewhere he could play up forward and maca back to CHB.
Fitzgerald and Salter both appear to be playing the same position in the forward line.
What does Redden need to do to get promoted ?
Heir looked ok in the forward line in the seconds will he be a chance against west.
Will Hall's heel be ok against West.
Not only do we lack at the centre bounces Big red wins the ball we have no one to take it away, and we are getting no run from defence. And just on the ball ups etc Cicca can not do it all alone he keeps throwing his body in others need to do the same. And Ron needs to make the moves quicker than he has been doing in the last two defeats.
So who can we promote from the seconds Redden, the other Stewart ,Heir the other Fiachi(spelling sorry) and Batsanis.
The good thing re our seconds we are blooding a large number of juniors like Fuller and the blonde lad on the wing . Injuries have again cuased problems like Groekes younger brother and Geddes.

But we do not need to panic yet the same result as last year at this stage . And as our oppents from the far northern suburbs said last year the season does not begin until round 10!!

Harsh but fair critique of slow eagles players

Postby Mr Fuller » Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:24 pm

Definitely lack of speed is an issue with the eagles at the moment.

I didn't make the ANZAC Day game on the weekend but from the previous two matches and from what friends have told me who were at the ANZAC Day match the following needs to be said

1. McKenzie can be a good onballer but he is far too slow to permanently play there. He should not be in there if the opposition contains good quality and quick onballers. He is much more suited to defense.

2. Rugolo is an absolute liability in the forward line. He'll have one good match followed by 5 shockers. When he is having a bad day the defeneders run off him and they set-up play into attack for the opposition. His best days are well past him.

3. What on earth is Klun doing in the side? Another player not up to league standard and another very slow onballer. He wasn't good enough to get a place in Sturt's side last year and when they were decent he could never permanently cement a place in their best 21. So what is he doing in our team??

4. Fairclough is not up to standard yet. If he was 25 years of age and playing the way he currently does then he would not be in the side. He is only in the side because he is young and has done nothing to warrant his position. I can't remember him ever getting over 12 positions in any match and you can't play someone as slow as him in the back-pocket on quick opposition rovers.

I think once we get our full team together we will definitely be around the mark but at the moment we don't have the depth of Centrals. By mid-year hopefully we'll have Symonds, Inkster and Colville back in the team. I'd like to see Petrenko and Batsanis in as well to give extra pace.

I no it is early and yes we got some good quality players to come back, its just quickness and toughness around the ground we are lacking and that is just a sign of not been desperate enough or not wanting it enough. But once this does happen look out SANFL.

If, hypothetically, Skipworth wanted to come back and say, play for Centrals, would it be an automatic (with a fee, of course) transfer?

we can forget about skippy......he snapped his patella tendon and is out for the rest of the year........he should have never listened to the crap fed him and should have stayed here......

players we are desparately missing or returning from injury that WILL make a difference....

(missing/injured) Inkster, Colville, Skipworth, Westbrook (unable to play for us due to fathers illness)
(returing from injury) Petrenko, Hier

We have to take more marks inside our forward fifty. The ball came in nearly the same amount (54-50) against Centrals but we could not take a mark. 3 of our goals came from free kicks.

grand final hangover?..........perhaps!
