The History Trust of South Australia is running SA History Week from May 18 to 27 and to recognise 130years of wearing the “Blue & Whiteâ€, the South Adelaide Football Club will don a replica guernsey from 1877 when they take on Glenelg at Hickinbotham Oval on Sunday May 20th.
1877 was the first year of an organised football competition in South Australia, South Adelaide one of eight clubs involved including Port, Kensington, Woodville, Bankers, South Park, Adelaide and Victorian.
South won that inaugural 1877 premiership playing 13 matches, winning 10, drawing 2 and losing just once. Over the course of those 13 games, the team scored 23 goals, conceding just one for the entire season. Early team photos show a wide range of uniforms being worn across the team, all navy blue but with a variety in the extent of white worn around the collar and shoulders, the design selected one of those worn by a few players in the squad.
