Played some very good football under Micky Godden in the Bay's reserves, won the Reserve's Magarey medal...

Reckon he will go alright at the Eagles...

Come on , just say its evolved over the years because of Fullers one dimensional gamestyle and now almost everyone ( maybe except ehl ) is glad we have moved on in a different direction . If Godden gets it even half right re. recruits , we will be on our way to being a strong threat come finals time .
matt1 wrote:Agreed regarding the argument of our leg speed but I think it is important that all of us Eagles supporters acknowledge that part of our lack of speed has been brought about by our focus on 'accountability'.

Any natural flair and run was taken away from the players by the coaching staff.

you are kidding yourself if you think Mick Godden is going to walk in with a few recruits, and the eagles are going to be a top 3 side. Not sure how many people realise just how hard it is. I hope he does, but it doesnt just happen.

people can bag Fuller's recruiting and tactics, but in 06, when he brought in guys like Cooper, Dabrowski, Grocke, it arguably lifted them towards the premiership. I'm sure the same people with their knives out now were the first to pat Ron on the back. There has certainly been a few ordinary recruits but people have pretty short memories.

Fair bit of pressure being put on the new coach by some of you guys.

Yep agree we as a club recruited very very well in 06 .
But what happened after 06 not much if anything re recruits .Biaga springs to mind and Ron chased him .

Eagles lost a lot when Cooper left .He left a very big hole one of the best in and under players we as a club have had.Just look at 09 one week Ron brings in all the in and under players drops the receivers following week he reversed it.
The club needs some pacey midfileders a number one ruckman fullback and fullforward .

I was a fan of Ron up to 08 or the end of 07 .He did fantastic at oval ave or Fortress Woodville as some of us call it(hello gossip girl ;) ).But for the club to move forward we need a new Coach new directions new game plan .IN OTHER WORDS NEW IDEAS!!
Seeing "GOD" has cleaned out fortress woodville of all the senior /reserves coaches we may just get some new thinking.

Few of us are close enough to the inner sanctum to understand the workings of the club recruiting - how much input did Ron have in identifying Luke Toia, Biagi, Schwarze, Cheep. Being coach, he surely would have had the final say but he would have had to rely on the recruiting spotters to identify talent - there would be very few Saturdays free, if any, when Ron would have been able to go to VFL or country matches to view this talent first hand. Blame the Recruiting Committee, not solely Ron. Its remarkable that the Eagles have been competitive despite not one good marquee player to our Club in the past 3 years.
Having good spotters and, better still, someone in the relevant local competition who can turn the recruit towards the Eagles is invaluable.
The Northern Territory spotter/recruiter who, in 2001, secured youngsters Hentschel and Stokes to the Eagles was someone special - where has he gone!!!!. Examples are Sturt's excellent recruiting from Queensland lately (Luke Crane,Payne & others), North Adelaide seemed to grab a few from WAFL (even before Jarman shifted there), Centrals seem to have contacts in the Murray Valley/Northern Victorian league. Perhaps serious attention needs to be given to this aspect of a network of "spotters". Too easy to blame Ron.

Very true.

I would also say that Centrals seem to have a contact in Tasmania as from memory they have had a couple form there in the past

I think you'll find that Stokes/Hentschell came as a package (both come from Palmerston Magpies) and were recommended to/encouraged to go to the Eagles by former Eagles Development Officer in the 90s Wally Gallio. Wally is now back involved with the NT Thunder in the QAFL. Top bloke Wally.

2002 Wally went to ACT/NSW Rams and then had a short stint at Glenelg. So the NT connection the Eagles had well and truly has gone.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

A bit off topic, but is the AFL draft later than usual this year? Does that make it harder for SANFL clubs to recruit?

PS. Can add Luke Jarrad to that list of 2006 recruits.

As far as looking at 2006 and saying it was the recruiting that won us the premiership - I would say that was only the icing on the cake. We had two years (at least) previous of building towards it and consistently being one of the top couple of teams in the comp.

Looking at next season, we've still got a lot of hard work to do to catch the likes of Sturt and Glenelg ... and then Central ... so regardless of recruiting the Eagles need to lay the foundations again of what it takes to be amongst the best. Also have North who I reckon will be aiming pretty high in 2010. Having said that, I don't underestimate what our core playing group can achieve as I still believe the likes of Macca/Powell/Treeby/Jarrad/Dabrowski are as good as any others going around and they know what is required.

From memory I was calling for the recruiters blood at some stage in the last two years .
Hell even I could spot footballers when even Aurora was showing footy from NSW on fox.
Surely its not that hard to spot them but bringing them to Adelaide must be very hard .

Not sure whether a footy manager would be that useful. We need recruiters in the competitions that matter.

Hope the eagles have a shortlist already put together of players to swoop on should they not be drafted.

Would Godden have any insight into some of the WAFL stars given his role with the SA State side this year? Surely he would have had access to a lot of information on some of the players SA had to watch out for in the State game played this year???

Yep simon has left westies to go with mick at the eagles. I am sure Gatesy has left the bays with Mick and will be an assistant or be his runner.
