Not sure where Dog_ger ended up, but I always thought his suggestion of the SANFL being a summer competition wasn't a bad idea. 8 teams home and away; 4 months Oct-Jan. Tsitas has proved it's not necessarily detrimental to keep playing in the off-season. Could give footballers not in the AFL a chance to earn more cash. The SANFL would only have the NTFL and The Strikers as competition.

The only clue I will give is that the team is located near Colonnades Shopping Centre

Do enough teams have decent enough lights to hold games? surely you wouldn't want games at 2:30pm on a Saturday in the middle of summer.

And the eagles are putting lights up or may have already who knows maybe enough clubs could

Footy is a winter sport, there are enough strengths and unique characteristics that make a marketable and sustainable competition.

The 8-10 year AFL player is unlikely to want to play SANFL post their career especially one who has been a fringe player like Trengrove and Grey due to the pressures. Let them find their niche in community football.

Still plenty of good young footballers that want to play SANFL footy.

Major difference being the SANFL was the number 1 ticket in town back then.

I love the SANFL but its really getting harder to see a positive future for the comp. An AFL reserves is only 5-10 years away and who knows what the consequence of that will be to player retention.

Mate the difference you point out is actually supports my argument, players were leaving our comp to chase coin and easier training long before the AFZl came into existence.

I can’t see a reserves comp in the next 20 years if at all. With West Coast abandoning the concept of a 2nds team, the expansion of AFLW, the impact of Covid on the AFL bottom line, the propping up of GC and GWS, and the AFL will most likely expand to accommodate Tassie and possibly the NT rather than relocate existing clubs, a reserves competition is nothing but a pipe dream compared to current competition and exconomic realities facing the AFL.

No chance of a reserves comp. The WAFL look after 2 clubs, the SANFL look after 2 clubs, the AFL will make sure that remains in place and they only need to fund the expanded VFL.

Yeah but wait to Melbourn/Bulldogs go on a 3-5 year rivalry at the top of the table and the non Victorian clubs whinge its because of the advantage they get from playing predominately all AFL listed teams plus the experience of getting to travel, plus they play to exact AFL rules etc.

We've already heard Port threaten/plant the seed of the idea that they would be open to moving comps.

Ha Ha, you think the Victorian centric AFL will listen to non-Victorian clubs whinging about disadvantage? There are 8 non Victorians team in the AFL simply to create a National market for the AFL/VFL and Victorian based clubs TV revenue and sponsorship revenue.

The AFL’s dream is Former VFL clubs winning premierships with the occasional concession to an interstate club once a decade. Victoria is there biggest market they will prioritise that over others hence why unless a Victorian based club goes brown there will be no relocation to the Tassie or the NT.

The AFLs response to to Port raising this issue will be you can join the VFL but you have to fund everything yourself. We’ve got other budget emperatives

I suggested the VFL earlier this year elsewhere and someone closer to Port than you or me said the AFL will fund it

You may need to look west for some inspiration Booney coming out of the WAFL west coast will not have a stand alone club in the WAFL and peel thunder is struggling and gets players from other WAFL clubs I’m assuming Peel thunder is connected to Fremantle

Few signings for West

Josh Carmichael – A strong midfielder who trained with the club in the preseason before going back to play for Merbein in the Sunraysia Football League where he was voted as the Best Player in the competition for 2021. Wins his own football, has an elite work rate and makes excellent decisions with ball in hand.



Liam Delahunty – Previously in the GWS Academy before going to Port Melbourne this year. This versatile interceptor defender can play tall or small, Liam has a great football IQ and excellent skills. We have been working on getting him to West Adelaide for the last 18 months and it is great to finally get him to the club for 2022.



Michael Mattingly – A high quality goal kicking mid fielder with elite foot skills on both sides of his body. Michael represented NSW/ACT at U18 level before moving to the VFL to play with Coburg. For the past 3 years he has starred for Kyabram in the Goulburn Football League winning the league’s best and fairest in 2019. Michael commented “Playing SANFL is something I’ve been interested in for a long time, and I’ve had a great relationship with West Adelaide for a number of years now. I’m keen to play a role and assist the club in climbing up the ladder”.



Bayleigh Welsh – The captain of the Dandenong Stingrays in the NAB League this year gone, will be a 20YO next year. One of the best characters you will find in the NAB League, is a quality player with some amazing traits, if it wasn’t for a couple of small setbacks this year he would be drafted for sure. We hope he still gets drafted but if he doesn’t he will be at the club next year to continue his development. He has elite skills, plays across half back and reads the game exceptionally well.



Clayton Gay – Another Dandenong Stingray boy from this year, Clayton will come across with Bayleigh and continue to develop should he not get drafted this year. A 20YO next year and someone who was one of the best players in the country at 16. He is a classy player with an elite left foot kick, someone that knows where the goals are and also makes excellent decisions with ball in hand.


Blair Rubock – A player with huge X factor, the club has been working to get Blair for the last 18 months and were delighted to land him for 2022. He played in Tassie for Clarence in 2019 before heading to the QAFL in 2020 and 2021 where he played with Labrador. Blair is a small pressure forward who runs sub 11 seconds for 100m and is dangerous in front of goal. He has an amazing spring and has taken some massive marks in recent years which provides some added excitement to his game.

Looks like Gotchy has been busy.
