AN eight-goal haul by Brant Chambers delivered a nine-point win for Sturt against West Adelaide at Broadspectrum Oval yesterday.
Chambers, a classical full forward with fly-paper fingers and a booming kick, dominated as former Centrals star Rick Macgowan celebrated his first win as an SANFL league coach.

The win - which was marred by a brawl just on half-time - was set up by a steady effort from captain Ben Nelson, who went about his business in trademark unobtrusive manner.

He had an influence on every line and steadied the Double Blues when they were under siege in the third quarter.

Sturt had constructed a commanding half-time lead after polished performances from experienced hands Nelson, Tim Weatherald, Jade Sheedy and evergreen ruckman Simon Feast.

Like a vintage car, it took Sturt a quarter and a bit to warm up, but when they opened up and employed a longer and more direct approach they kept finding Chambers charging out of the goal square.

As the match wore on, some of the younger guns - including Ryan Darling and Tristan Gum - began to impose themselves.

Sturt's attacks were set up by the ruck combination of Feast and the flourishing Fabian Deluca, who is destined to spend most of his career in the AFL. Feast doesn't have the raw athleticism or youthful spring of Deluca, but he reads the play well. Alex Lee, a Port Adelaide rookie, made a swift impression with a couple of strong marks and will be a recruit worth marking down for a fine year with the Double Blues.

West Adelaide's Kurt Tippett impressed with his raw talent and Ryan Willits, playing his first game since transferring from Glenelg in acrimonious circumstances during the week, made his presence felt.

The Bloods' busiest players were Kristoffer Vanderloo and Luke Jericho, who threatened to speed up the Bloods' ball movement every time they laid a glove on it.

Predictably, West's third-term onslaught was instigated by this duo and some fine work in the backline from Ben Hollands, who was the architect for speedier movement.

In full flight, there was much to like about the Bloods. They ran in numbers and were unafraid to play on, having begun the game in a much more hesitant and cautious manner.

Mark Dragicevic found space from congested situations and West had enough forward forays, but were averted across Sturt's half-back line.

The greatest concern for the Bloods was their inability to move the ball with length and intent in the early stages.

Chambers was fantastic, so to Ben Nelson. It seems like we have a fair bit of depth in the 2nds. 4 or 5 players that could easily walk into the side next week. Well done Rick McGowan.
