Thought all along Centrals would come out on top in the end, purely because we were winning the ball in the contests. North's scores were coming mainly from our own turnovers. Once we cleaned up our disposal in the second half I thought the scores reflected the play. Both reports I suppose were worth making, but I will be surprised if either get as much as a reprimand. And J. Gowans wasn't the player reported for both. North for mine do lack the hard players. They all go running scared as soon as someone even talks about hard footy. Season looks good from the dogs point of view, and from what I saw of Sturt and west on TV, that's at least 3 teams we should be better than. These are the breakdowns of scores, and goalkickers that I had.
Central 3-3 4-6 11-9 16-10 106
North 4-1 6-4 8-8 8-10 64
J Westhoff 3.2 Callinan 2.2 Ware 2.1 J. Gowans, Dutschke 2 Lawry 1.2 Slade 1.1 Schell, C. Gowans, McKenzie 1
Younie 2.2 Alleway 2.1, Ryswyk 2 Weatherly 1.1 Grose, Wintle 1
Reserves scores Central 12-18 90 d North 10-9 69
These are my brief thoughts on some players.
Lawry and Grima both looked impressive. They aren't as dynamic and dominant as Cowan, but both are up to playing league standard.
Callinan looks a good find. Lots of pace, and hard to tell apart from Slade. If you think Slade's good, this guy is basically the same, but less experienced.
Slattery slotted in without a worry. Must have been hard adjusting to a winning brand of footy but did a great job.
Giles held his own, and probably did more around the ground than the North ruckmen. Not that it was much, but really O'hara and Wakelin were crap. And no Hudson this season to help either.
Havelberg looked good as well.
Most of Central's best players were a bit down. Thomas was rerely sighted, Cochrane had a poor game, Wilson faded after a great start but came back at the end, Symes did little, Leigh Westhoff had a shocker, Currie must have been standing a goalpost because I didn't even realise he was playing until he walked off. Lots of improvement from all these guys will almost certainly come.
The Gowans, Switala, McKenzie and Slade just did exactly what they've been doing for years.
J. Westhoff looks a much improved player. Last year he bobbed up occasionally, tonight he was a threat all the time, competed against greater numbers and kept the ball alive, and created chances all night. Could destroy a team or two this year and will benefit greatly when Cowan, Graham, Sibenaler and Aufderheide come back, which will probably release Schell back to the forward line.
Schell disappointed me at CHB. From what he's done there in the past I expected him to chop off everything that came his way. Doubt he'll spend much of the year there, but if he does I still expect him to poll a lot of Magarey votes.
The reserves looked great. Unlike last year there seem to be plenty who will go on to play league at some point.
For North, thought early Hart was fantastic. He chopped off so many of our passes, and constantly kicked short to a player in the clear to steady things. Later in the game when our disposal improved he was nullified somewhat, but looks a good pickup. Don't think he'll be the saviour, as he won't run and carry, take pack marks or take a key forward very ofter but a wise head in defense is always useful. I expect though that teams will try to put running players on him a lot this year, as he definitely doesn't have the pace anymore. Bamford was useless tonight, mainly because nobody was getting the ball for him and everyone knows he won't get it himself! Defense looked a key defender short, and forward line was too predictable and didn't have anyone who looked really dangerous. Midfield just needs a hard nosed player to play in and under and tackle hard. This was shown up a lot tonight. Ivens will help, but I think they need another. Not sure what Motlop was doing except making the demons decision to take him look stupid. Made the most ridiculously selfish decisions and seems to refuse to help the team's cause.
