Spot on Dutchy that law exists so the umpire was correct.
Yeah, that is true but the umpires are also instructed that if the two tussling ruckman encroach too much on his 'bouncing space' he should just throw the ball up. The umpire in question didn't do that and whilst technically, the free kick could have been there, perhaps balling it up again would have been best.
You usually see that, but it requires the umpires to stop themselves and throw the ball up. No doubt there's a point where the umpire can't stop themselves anymore before the ball passes the ruckmen that they can encroach further. Ultimately it should be up to the ruckmen to keep out of the umpire's way. I'm quite happy with the decision to be honest, and it's such a rare occurence I hardly think it's worth creating a massive storm over.
