I went to the SANFL V NEAFL game and I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable games of footy I have been to, not just because the SANFL won but because the umpiring was infact THE BEST I have EVER seen in any game of football. They just let it go, but paid the obvious ones. As a result the game flowed beautifully and became a free flowing fast paced match.
The SANFL got out of the blocks quickly slamming 4 goals to 0 in the first few minutes but credit to the NEAFL, they pegged it back in the 2nd term with some patient keepings off footy which frustrated SA and they got within 3 or 4 points I think.
No doubt Godden gave them a half time rocket because they were VERY late in coming out for the 3rd term but from then on in SA destroyed the NEAFL in a very one-sided half and really showcased the gap between the leagues.
Player reviews:
SANFL
James Boyd - Was everywhere through the middle, calm and composed and had 33 touches, 7 marks and 4 clearances. Hard to contain.
Paul Thomas - Ran his guts out across half-back and through the middle. A few woeful kicks but otherwise a true captains game. 32 touches and 10 marks.
Nick Liddle - Seemed to start slowly but really came into the game in the 2nd half with great work inside and outside. His class was definitely on show in the last term. Finished with 27 touches 7 marks and a goal.
Braydn O'Hara - One of the best for SA with his clean and dangerous long kicking out of defence or into attack. Probably the best I have seen him play in a couple of years, he set up a lot of forward thrusts with good decision making and skill execution. AFL talent for sure and one of my favourite SANFL players. However probably won't get drafted now... Finished with 27 touches 6 marks 9 inside 50's and a goal.
George Thring - Carried his blistering SANFL form into the big game and was high in the best for SA. Had a really solid first half when a few of his peers did not, never dropped his head for the whole game. He certainly has improved in the past 12 months. 26 touches and 8 marks.
Daniel Caire - Started like a house on fire with lots of quick possessions and clean skills plus some goals. Faded late but the game was done but certainly impressed me today. Showed quite a bit of pace at times. 24 touches 5 marks and 2 goals.
Luke Jarrad - Huge game from Jarrad today, probably the best at decision making throughout the course of the game. I distinctly remember one passage of play at half back when he was put under the pump by an errant disposal with 2 guys right on him but he gathered the ball on the deck, brushed off one bloke, weaved past another and accelerate away before setting up a bloke free on the other wing. It was Dangerfield like to be honest. Brilliant. But for the rest of the day he was a 4 quarter player, very solid game from the VC. 24 touches and 9 marks.
Chris Schmidt - Decent game without being outstanding today, linked well and disposed fairly neatly and had good voice on the field that I could hear. Certainly played his part in the midfield domination. 24 touches 5 marks and 5 clearances.
Joel Cross - I didn't notice him a great deal for some reason but the stats said he was getting the pill! From what i did see though he was his typical self, always a lot of time to dispose of the ball and was actually very hard at the footy when in dispute. 23 touches and 2 marks.
Sam Gray - The nippy little fella had a typical solid game, and really broke away from his direct opponent in the 2nd half, getting to the right spots for the ball drop and cleared the ball a lot. Disposal a mixed bag but definitely a solid game overall. 20 touches 2 marks 6 clearances and a goal.
Matthew Goldsworthy - Very quiet by his 2013 standards in the first half but bounced back in the SA dominance in the 2nd half like many players. Played a similar game to Gray, crumbed well and cleared the ball fairly well with numerous attacks into the forward 50. Finished with 19 touches and 7 marks.
Matthew Suckling - Not a huge stat game by his lofty standards (would be a Magarey favourite atm) but still had an impact in the contested footy. Put his body on the line a lot and did some great grunt work and team things today. So whilst not a huge game, he was important. 19 touches 3 marks and 3 clearances.
Ryan Ferguson - Won the Fos Williams Medal for BOG. Dour when he needed to be and creative at other times whilst constantly taking strong intercepting marks. He would have saved at least 5 or 6 certain goals with his strong marking in the hole. Huge game and deserved the medal. Had a Chad Cornes circa 2007 type of presence about him and took a big hanger as well.
Jonathon Beech - Seemed to be everywhere when it counted and presented as a good leadup forward evidenced by his 11 marks. kept presenting all day and was pretty good for most of the contest. Finished with 16 touches 11 marks and 2 goals.
Leigh Ryswyk - What a game! He was actually my first thought for the medal given how much he thrashed all who were put onto him. Only thing stopping him was he didn't get a huge amount of touches. Ran hard down the wing for some long goals and other times rested forward and still kicked them. He was kicking them at will, could have kicked them in his sleep I think. Great game and his finishing skills were a real highlight of the day. Finished with 14 touches (all kicks) 7 marks 4 inside 50's and 6 goals 2 behinds.
Andrew Ainger - Was well held for the first half and could not seem to break free of his opponent (forget who but he did a great job). In the second half and especially the last 1/4 when the NEAFL defensive pressure dropped right away he seemed to get free more often and take some marks and kick a couple. Nowhere near his best but finished off the game well. Had 12 touches 9 marks 6 inside 50's and 2 goals 1 behind.
Matty Campbell - Opened the account for SA with a clever snap before being shut right out of the game until the last 1/4 when he played more through the middle and got a lot of touches with minimal pressure. Far from his best.
James Mieklejohn - Solid game in the ruck and was too good for Michael and Reid from the NEAFL. Not his dominant self but was playing a more second fiddle to Craig Parry. Finished with 12 touches 7 marks 13 hitouts and a goal.
Craig Parry - Absolutely smashed the NEAFL rucks in the hitouts and tapwork. He was the driving force between the SA dominance in the second half giving his mids first use with well timed taps, double-handed taps and sheer strength in the contest. He plays 10cm taller than he is (194cm). In the first half though he was given a bath by Michael around the ground as he simply could not keep up with the young Lion. He came back with a better around the ground effort after half time but was still trailing at many marking contests and blowing hard. But in terms of pure ruckwork he was exceptional. 11 touches 3 marks and 33 hitouts.
Michael Wundke - The big lad from South Adelaide lead well and marked strongly but was also fairly well held at times. Given SA kept pumping it in he had a lot of opportunities. Still hit the scoreboard enough for a full forward. 11 touches 5 marks and 4 goals.
Joel Tippett - Had no real need to even be present after half time but did well when he ball came his way taking a few good marks and setting up attacks. 10 touches 3 marks and 4 rebound 50's.
Alex Georgiou - Dour game, gave nothing away and linked well with the smaller runners coming out of half-back. Put his body on the line on numerous occasions. Good game.
NEAFL
Paul Shelton - A huge game from Shelton, he never ever gave up, even in the second half rout, he was one of the few NEAFL players who kept trying and getting the pill. Caused a lot of headaches in the 2nd term when he cut through the SA midfield with numerous attacks. Has a good bit of pace and used it to his advantage. For mine he was BOG for the NEAFL but did not win the medal. Finished with 30 touches 13 marks 4 clearances and a goal.
Daniel Dzufer - You can see why he was on an AFL list, ran hard for most of the day and was high in the best for the NEAFL. Huge 2nd term with his great link play and strong marking around the ground. A tough matchup for SA. Great effort. Finished with 26 touches 10 marks 4 insides 50's and 7 rebound 50's.
Cheynee Stiller - Pretty good game from Stiller, he used his AFL experience well with a lot of smart play and good all round footy. Like many of his teamates, had a ripping 2nd term. Can hold his head high for his efforts. 26 touches and 11 marks.
Cameron Illett - A captains game today from Illett, he like Shelton never gave up despite being outnumbered at nearly every contest in the 2nd half, he still won his share of the footy. Lots of voice out on the field directing his troops and his skills were solid. A player I respect who could have easily played AFL in my eyes. Probably the best player outside the 2nd tier SANFL/WAFL/VFL leagues. 25 touches and 11 marks.
Andrew Boston - I liked his game, never panicked when faced with many tight situations and disposed of the footy very well. Had a strong body that will be AFL ready very soon and I can't see him playing NEAFL for too much longer. Definite AFL future and had a good game. Probably the 2nd most dangerous midfielder after Shelton for the NEAFL. 23 touches and 8 marks.
Scott Clarke - Solid effort coming out of defence but at times let himself down with a few panics and skills errors. Finished with 22 touches 8 marks and 7 rebound 50's.
Ryan Davey - I don't know much about the bloke but he certainly looks a player and could hold his own in the SANFL. Tried hard all day and ran forward a lot with some good attacking play. 22 touches 10 marks 6 inside 50's and a goal.
Hayden Kiel - Tried hard but struggled when SA put the foot down and made a few errors with disposal. Not too bad though.
Sam Michael - Brilliant effort from Michael, he really dominated around the ground with his big aerobic capacity and work rate. Parry and Mieklejohn could not keep up and he was a constant threat taking powerful marks in the middle, in defence or especially up forward. He got absolutely flogged in the ruckwork and bullied especially by Parry there but still overall had a big impact on the game. AFL future definitely once he improves his rucking. Very mobile. 13 touches 12 marks 5 hitouts 4 inside 50's and 2 goals 1.
Kallan Geary - I thought this bloke tried hard, especially early he was dangerous and getting away from the SA players setting up forward attacks. Solid game before fading late. 16 touches and 10 marks
Nick Hayes - Young Hayes will learn a lot from this game, he was pushed off the footy a lot but when he did have it, he was pretty neat most of the time bar a couple of direct turnovers which cost goals. With more strength he could be an AFL player, has plenty of time. 16 touches and 6 marks.
Jason Burge - Tried hard I thought but again in the end found the game a bit too much and fell away. Certainly has a strong body though and he used it a few times. 15 touches and 1 mark.
Cameron Dunne - You can see this bloke is a dangerous player, numerous times he caused headaches for SA with quick marks on the lead and then playing on and linking well. Has potential AFL quality with the smarts he's got. But was starved of opportunities in the 2nd half and was largely unsighted. 15 touches 9 marks 2 goals.
Rory Walton - Played an ok game but didn't notice him a great deal given I know little about him. 15 touches 7 marks and a goal.
Sam Faure - Struggled to get into the game for most of the day and was largely inneffective. 13 touches and 3 marks.
Brad Vassal - Has SANFL experience but was a passenger for his side today. Capable of a lot more, so fairly ordinary game. 12 touches 6 marks and a goal.
Rick White - Made a few ok contests but also lacked the skills to hurt players. Seemed rather slow with the ball. 12 touches 5 marks.
Wayde Mills - Did a very good job on Ainger for much of the first half before he got away a little. Fairly quiet in the 2nd half. 10 touches 4 marks.
Josh Baxter - Starved of opportunities despite looking fairly strong at times. You can see he's got the ability to be a fairly dominant forward but couldn't get into it much. 9 touches 6 marks 5 inside 50's.
Josh Hall - Took a few decent grabs but could not convert any of his opportunities. Thought he presented constantly but poor decisions from the kicker cost him a few shots on goal. 9 touches 6 marks 0 goals 2 behinds.
Ben Merrett - Can't say I noticed him at all, very quiet game. 5 touches and 4 marks.
Dylan Reid - Outjumped and outclassed by Parry all afternoon. Faired a little better against Mieklejohn I thought and won a few taps and fought hard for the ball in dispute. But overall was shut right out of the game. 5 touches 0 marks 4 tackles and 8 hitouts.
All in all I was fairly lenient against the NEAFL given I don't know them well, but I thought generally the whole team went missing in the second half and they were going through the motions as the SANFL put on a clinic of clean and classy football.
Fraser Thurlow for the NEAFL Under 22's caught my eye for the 15mins of the last 1/4 that I saw. Lots of good marks, hitouts and ball around the ground. Quite a mobile big man.
