Wow, there's some bizarre commentary on this thread.
Bloke seems like a credible sort of fella and has obviously earnt a lot of respect from people at The Parade.
I look forward to seeing how it pans out.
From an SANFL-fan perspective, it's nice to see one of 'our own' get a job.

Is it just me or are there a lot of "all too forgiving" south supporters on this thread.
He was captain of your club and walked out - too much love for a bloke who deserted you I reckon.

Not sure that Ben 'deserted' South Adelaide, Spargo?

Not entirely sure of the circumstances surrounding his departure from Noarlunga. He retired, from memory, didn't he?

Was told he wouldn't necessarily be a required player at the season's end by Ron (enter Wundke). By Dugga's own admission, his body wasn't 100% but after treatment in the off season came good and obviously starred for Langhornes that next year. The rest is history. Got an amazing amount of respect for the guy, had a great chat with him mid season after South were pumped at The Parade. Top all round bloke, and has deserved the two premiership medals around his neck. Wish him the absolute best with the Norwood coaching gig - big boots to fill.

Totally agree. He and Handby were both told that their futures with South were at an end. To be fair, I don't think Ben saw the end of any of his last five seasons with us. I wish him all the best and maybe he will come back one day and coach us.

So, Warren didn't really walk out on the club, then, did he?

He made the decision to go after being told what I posted above. You can say he retired or you can say he was pushed. Both right and neither wrong. One of if not the most liked players in recent times. We were lucky to have him as his family had a strong Sturt connection.

Cheers for that...

Yeah, wasn't his brother-in-law Jordan Mutton, who played a couple of League games for Sturt, from memory?

He was targeted by the Norwood coaching panel and convinced he still had something to offer.

I could understand if his first name was Doug or his surname was Duldig or his nickname was Rabbits?
I even looked up the word online and it means a small test at uni or to rain lightly so that didn't really help me.
Is Ben too hard to pronounce?

I believe the nickname stuck since he was a kid - introduced himself as Ben Dugga Warren.

For god's sake Phil, he could have stuck it out - didn't - went to LHC (not so hard, probably better coin) then realised he had something more to offer to footy, only at the parade and not south.
But don't go upsetting anyone.

How so? Just because one club choses to appoint a coach straight out of retirement?

Only Laird, Maloney & Mickan would be coaches left in the SANFL system that don't see their current role as a stepping stone to the AFL. Coaches going from full time roles to part time, less spend on coaches etc...

Rightly or wrongly its now the nature of the competition, a servant to the big league...

Stuck it out? The decision was made for him & I'm sure he doesn't regret a thing. A flag at his home club with his brother & mates + 2 flags with Norwood.

indeed Dutchy. The coaches who stay longer term may now not be the more successful ones .
