Plenty of encouraging signs for Norwood. Given that, like the Crows, they were missing a number of first choice players (Culpitt, Borlace, De Jongh and Meesen, playing for Crows, all come to mind) but weren't completely disgraced against a team that wasn't far below their NAB Cup team.

Looks like Trevor Hill has brought in a more handball-oriented game, which has the potential to come undone under high pressure, but which will be great to watch when its on song. Vlatko moved strongly around the 50 arc to present a genuine target all night; surprised he wasn't named in best players. Bartemucci was excellent, with his willingness at the contest and better finishing. Good signs from the younger rookies, namely Pollock, Aish and deVries, from the Hills - Aish brought the house down with that last quarter goal.

The Legs moved the ball forward with more purpose than last year, and showed more of a willingness to play down the corridor, while capitalising more readily on a number of Crows errors, particularly over-use of handball (as Neil Craig admitted). Still need a couple more marking options, and also lacked some numbers front and centre at times, but bring some of those 4 names in to the team, and there should be a bit to look forward to this year.

Some very real positives to draw from the game for us on field; the crowd at the Coopers Hill BBQ was about 20-long all night, indicating the crowd were willing to support all aspects of the game; I suspect the crowd estimates in the papers were off, I would have thought more like 8 - 8,500 at least.

Admittedly a number of the Crows top 22 were out, but was very happy with most aspects of the game from a Norwood perspective. From the other perspective, a good sum raised for charity.

A huge success, a fantastic night. Plenty of encouraging signs for the 'Legs for the upcoming year and what was most pleasing was the skill and composure of our younger brigade.

To all the Crows fans, how good was Friday night? Do you remember supporting a local team that plays with passion and a club you can be proud of? Unfortunately (much like the Crows fans next to me asking for directions home), probably not.

Local footy is alive and well, bring on March 31st.

REDLEGS YOUNG GUNS IMPRESS

The names for Norwood weren't any different last night but the improvement in several of the club's promising youngsters certainly was.

Despite the Redlegs fading out of the contest against the Crows after the first quarter, players such as Mitchell Sandery and Marc Cox proved that they have a long-term future at the club.
And perennial fringe player, Matthew Bartemucci, provided a much-needed spark from the wing. Sandery broke free of opponents to feed out handballs to his team-mates and the nuggety Cox was determined not to be intimidated by his higher-profile enemies. Under the guidance of new coach Trevor Hill, the game acted as a valuable learning curve for developing bigmen Brad deVries and Adam Cockshell.

Cockshell spent most of the evening alongside Ian Perrie and toiled manfully while deVries was able to test his abillty in the ruck against Rhett Biglands. Only given the last term to show their ability, Mat Brunoli used his pace to good effect while Jessie Aish cooly booted a goal on the run after playing three quarters in the reserves.
