this sounds very familiar and would be quite understandable when you think about it.

I vaguely remember it being an Allen Stewart thing as well.

Yep, that's the major part of it.

Also a way of introducing players' respect for the tools of their trade - they all go hunting for their footy at the end of training instead of leaving it to the property stewards.

I think in the early stages (around 91 or so from memory), the club couldn't afford to buy 60 footys and having the players pay for them was a way to get the initiative started.

$130- lighter in the pocket Inside 50?

Dont think it was that much... but the balls were deducted from 2007 match payments...

The club arranges a 'bulk buy' deal for the players and does deduct from match payments (at Centrals this is the case anyway).

Makes sense.
As an academy coach with junior footbal (soccer as you guys call it  ), the kids I coach are never allowed to pick up the soccer ball, they must always move it with their feet no matter what they are doing or where they are going.

All they charge the player is $60 for their ball and they can pay when they like either by match payments or by cash at the club. I think it is a good deal $60 for a good ball every year and the players pay for nothing other than the ball, all uniforms, functions etc are paid for by the club. I think the Centrals players get a great deal and the club is re vamping the Gym and the players have not been asked to help pay for it. From what I have heard other clubs make the players pay for their club shirts and functions etc.
Paying for 1 ball that you can take home every night is fine as all the other benefits stack up.

Agreed if you're on the money, North player have to pay for their own suit as well as tickets to the Gala Dinner, etc, wouldn't be hard for Ressies player to actually make a loss playing footy for North. :?

Apparently, the former is reserved for an Eagles player I will be teaching with this year!
At least, that seems to be the case on the actual oval in a match.

Hows this for a rumour I got sent via email last night (from someone involved in a different footy club).

No idea if its true or not.

Ben Cousins wants to play for free in the SANFL next year- will play rounds 8-16 to play every club once. Rehab at start of season so wont start to round 8. At end of season will resume rehab and ensure he is injury free for an AFL bid again in 2009. (Play for free = no salary cap issues for said club).
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.
