Glenelg went into the game "cocky" as, knowing the injuries & suspensions South had, they thought they only had to show up to get the points, nicely played by Jack during the week!! 8)

Don't think Port will be fooled by Jacks cries for sympathy, injuries or not South will be show'n this week why they'll finish bottom.

And maybe a match report?

Never said i didn't like it, i said it as a joke, i wasn't having a go at you at all NM. I just noticed that you've said a few positive things about Port lately, in contrast to a few months ago when you tended to criticise them. Just an observation, wasn't designed to be taken as a serious post.

A solid contest at Alberton today.South holding out a fast finishing Magpie unti by 3 points.

South

16 9 105

Goals-Warren 5,Baird 3,Iljecsen 2(?)

Port

14 18 102

Goals-Maric,Rugolo,AhChee 2

With Port kicking to the Southern end in the 1st quarter with the help of a two to three goal breeze a few wasted opportunities saw South keep themselves in it.AhCheee was good across half forward for Port and Clayton was reaping the efforts of Maric in the ruck.Only Turner and Torney for South showed any resistance while Warren led Eichner around to kick 2 first quarter goals.Travis Baird looking dangerous with 1.
Jeremy CLayton missed an easy on the run shot at goal and the teams went to the qusrter time huddle at:

Port 4 6
South 3 1

At the start of the second quarter South goaled first after a big mark and goal from Dale Ellis while Turner and Torney continued to repel. In a good quarter Corey Achee kicked 2,
Shayne Biasci kicked an important running goal after Eichner burst from defence and Travis Baird acquainted himself to Jeremy Clayton, but the important player once more was Warren who, with two strong marks led Eichner a merry dance and kicked 2 more to have 4 at half time:

Port 8 8
South 8 4

After half time South came out firing kicking the first two goals into a slight breeze to take the lead from the Magpies.Nathan Krakouer, showing he might get called up to higher duties in the next week or two kicked a fantastic goal after losing a marking contest, then springing to his feet to take the ball away from the pack with pace and goal.South got out to a 3 goal lead but Port hit back through Vinnie Rugolo who kicked the first of his 2 goals, showing some park in the forward line in the process.Port's attack had to relinquish AhChee to defence to quell the influence of Warren, and although Warren kicked a goal AhChee was influental at full back and kept Port in the game.
Just as Port began to run Josh Thewlis took a strong mark and goaled to keep the 'Pies at bay:

South 13 6
Port 11 11

It appeared as though the game was out of Ports reach Baird kicked the first goal of the last quarter for South, taking them to an early 13 point lead in the last quarter.Rugolo goald again for Port and the 'Pies had plenty of chances.Hargraves (twice) CLayton and Biasci all missing kickable set shots while South went forward twice for goasl to Bachmann and Otten.A one on one contest developed on the outer wing and with Krakouer bouncing his way to half forward and looking to centre the ball Thewlis ran and chased hard to get Krakouer right on the attacking 50 arc and this appeared to be Ports last chance. But,late goals to Thurgood and Maric got Port back to within 3 points with only moments to go.Souths defence, well served by Torney,Bennett and Turner all day were under seige.A missed mark on the members wing from Dale Ellis gave Eichner the chance to deliver into Ports forward line, the barely sighted Harry Miller took an uncontested mark right in front of the main stand,as he went back to take his kick the final siren sounded. The distance porved to be too much for Miller who failed to register a score and South Adelaide earnt and well deserved the two points they took from Alberton today.

The mentor (Jack Cahill) took the points over his protege (Tim Ginever) and for once Jack made his way down the the away team rooms to sing a song he would never thought he would sing under the grandstand of Alberton Oval.

Poor kicking is poor football,Port's missed shots combined with Souths accuracy and dour defence proved the main points of the game.Ben Warren the difference with 5 goals.

Best:

South-Warren,Torney,Turner,Baird,Bachmann

Port-AhChee,Maric,Clayton,Thurgood,Krakouer.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Nice report Booney - disappointing result.

Hmmm... While two points would have been nice, had we won I think it would have been one of the most undeserved wins ever, and perhaps the "soul-searching" that will surely happen this week may not have been seen as neccessary. Basically Port were rubbish (aside from about 6 or 7 standouts) and it was suprising that we were never really out of contention. That probably says something about South too... so don't get to excited down at Pantherland.

In the first quarter and a half Port wasted good opportunities to stretch out to a match winning lead, then the momentum changed just before half time with South scoring 3 goals (I think?) in time-on - a trait that Cahill's Port were once renowned for - and the next two in the second half. I couldn't see any startling tactical switches, I think it was just a matter of Port's poor skills (especially in short-passing) catching up with them. South looked dominant from then on as we made skill-error after skill-error and poor decision after poor decision. I kept being amazed by the scoreboard which still showed us close enough to perhaps steal it - but we didn't quite have enough.

On Ah Chee, while he was good today, I think we lose more without him in defence than we gain with him up front. Eichner showed today it will take some time for him to be able to run the defence by himself (although his second half was a big improvement on his first). Maric and Krakouer were excellent - they will get called up before long with that form. Thurgood was excellent - must have taken 15 marks and did some classy stuff in pressure situations, and J Clayton had an awesome second half but his delivery was poor in the first half. Rugalo was impressive and Dipper and Elstone were reliable as ever. But we didn't apply enough pressure on South and allowed them to clear from defence far too easily and the number of dropped marks (or completely misjudged attempts in marking contests) was astounding. Hargreaves had a dog of a day and was subjected to some pretty harsh sledging at one point after missing several straight-forward set shots and being out-positioned repeatedly in marking contests. I don't think he's our worst forward in the past 20 years, but apparently one Magpie fan does...

Yes, thankyou very much, you South supporters should be thanking me for bagging you & Jacko in an earlier post, little did you know it was a ploy Jack & i had to motivate the players, yes unfortunately it takes something like that to fire them up & fire them up it did.
Port were very ordinary today & if it takes a side like South to expose them, there in for a long year.
Did this game mean anything to Port like it did to South? obviously not.
I can't understand a home game against the old coach & they layed down.
How embarassing, hang your heads in shame.
I'm not going to name any particular person for the loss, lets say the club has to explain the reasons for why they recruited & payed a hefty clearance fee for this bloke coz as far as i'm concerned his off field behaviour has finally caught up to him, now his team mates are paying the price, the coach of his old club would be    his head off.

What a great day

To lose that game would have been absolutely deflating. Good thing we didnt :D

Couldnt be prouder of the guys today. The spirit and teamwork is 100% on last year.

I lost count of the number of times port fans would yell "C'mon port, it's only south" Arrogance :D :D :D

Were you in the bowling club Fatal?

One bloke in there gave Hargs a massive serve. After Hargs had spent some time on the pine in the third 1/4 the bloke gave him a massive spray and Hargs returned fire with 'the bird' .....one from front on the other from over his shoulder.
