AFL players returning for trial games

Rehn made the mistake of not playing Jacob Svhunack and the league advised hr eas required to go to a club where he would get a game. Rehn stuffed up again. I think centrals had a player stripped of them as well

You would then get the absurd situation of having Daniel Wakelin (V/Capt) in the two's along with any combination of Alleway, Gill, Weatherly and Hargraves. That would piss them off no doubt. You could play the AFL listed players in the two's to keep your regular SANFL players in for team unity. That sort of situation drives players to leave. Food for thought and it has been discussed by some North players in a hypothetical but it could happen.

There is a rule to stop that happening. Once omitted from their AFL side, a player must play two consecutive SANFL League games before being available to be dropped to the reserves. This is what caused Jacob Surjan to move from Centrals to Port Adelaide last year. I think maybe one other player has moved because of that as well.

Luke Peel played 4 league games at the Eagles. Sure, the move didnt help his career at either level but neither would have playing him in the Under 19s for x amount of weeks.

There has been a few players move clubs. Tom Gilligan, Bowen Lockwood, Jacob Schuback, Ian Perrie, Mark Harwood, Jacob Surjan, Luke Peel off the top of my head.

Yes its a disruption. Yes its a pain in the butt and in the end some fringe players/youngsters trying to win a spot get shunted but as it is, its only a trial game. The SANFL clubs can play them in the reserves if they want in the trial games - Port played Pickett in the ressies last year. In the end though, during the actual season, the SANFL clubs just have to lump it. If they dont want AFL players possibly coming back and forth then at the mini draft they just obstain from picking.

Been reading everyones posts with interests and it is a hard one.

I can understand Drebins point of view but the bottom line remains, clubs put their hands up for the SANFL dividend that comes from the success of the two AFL clubs, take the part funded AFL positions of development managers (AFL fund the SANFL who in turn pass it on to the clubs) and they put up their hands to get the "free" recruits each year. Couple this with the fact we are a feeder competition the AFL and I believe the SANFL clubs have to accept the direction from the league and the AFL clubs on playing the AFL listed players particularly in trial games.

If you want to run your own race don't take the SANFL/AFL coin and don't take part in the mini-draft.

We all love our SANFL and prefer it to the AFL (I admit that I have a foot in both camps as a Crows Boundary-line member but my first love is the Bays). However, the game changed in 1990 and we have to accept that Crows and the smears are one of the SANFLs primary concerns for the growth and health of the game hence the SANFL clubs have to be prepared to help the AFL clubs be successful.

However HBT post on being left a player short isn't on, maybe the SANFL can pass a by-law that if a SANFL club is directed to only play an AFL listed player for part of a game, the club can replace that AFL player on the bench with a reserves player so they are not left short. it is a replacement not an interchange. Once the AFL/SANFL player comes on for the designated AFL/SANFL player the first palyer can not come back on.

Obviously this would have to be arranged prior to the game on the Thursday so all parties were informed.

mate, couple questions for you

firstly, if these players in questioned became available for one reason or another during the regular season, are you happy to play them in your league side

secondly, does your club have any hesitation in taking the financial hand backs that is provided by the afl clubs......

I think we know the answer to both of these questions, and it's the same answer with all clubs........

I don't see an issue, it's the nature of the beast.......

I think a yong ruckman at South's would learn quite a bit, playing along side Brogan, even if it's just for one game

sydney dog - Naturally you would take them and under the rules you have to play them. That doesn't stop it being disruptive or annoying the SANFL players, but my real point is that it is expected the SANFL clubs have to be dictated to by the AFL clubs and if any stand up over contentious selections etc players get moved from club to club and in some cases played in positions that the SANFL coaches don't want them to play in because the local coaches want balance and to win - that is their job they are employed to do, as much as it is developing potential AFL players. I know it is a diffucult situation and there is no right or wrong answer and we are stuck with it but it does not make it right or make it harmonious at all times.
