Meanwhile, back in realsville, the current leader of the Snout's POTY is Tom Holmes.

Haven't heard of him?

Dunno what he looks like?

You will.

N.B. the SL Poty has been in existence 3 years, so far twice the winner has been the club B&F (and one scored a Magarey, as well...)
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

meanwhile blokes like Guilhaus, Button, C KAne, Wallant, Kellock, Fosdike and McGregor can't get a game in our ones but would at at least half the other sides don't get a mention in this thread.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Can vouch for that. Has been impressive the couple of times I've seen him play, including (I think) his first game at Woodville Oval last year. Sharples was another I was impressed with. Broadbent from the Eagles is one to watch - he will be a star.

As for young players who will probably forge their careers through the SANFL and perhaps not to higher levels, Sam Fairclough is a very good player. Potential 300 games? Can we start a thread counting up to 300 for him? Spelly?

Hey Fellow Footy Fans,

From a Doggies point of view, here's a few that I rate as pretty talented youngsters with bright futures ahead of them... Some you may not have heard of but seing as though I go to both the reserves and league game on a weekly basis, and write up match reviews for our club website, I thought I might just shed more light on a couple of possible future SANFL and maybe even potential AFL recruits. I know the majority of clubs only recruit 17 or 18 year olds and guys listed are over that but just look at Justin Westhoff with The Power ???...

LOUIS HADDEN - # 2, 19 y.o local Barossa product (Angaston I believe) kind of similar to Spurr although not as strong but with probably a bit more pace. Is pretty good on both sides of the body and likes to run and carry the ball. Again, can't crack league side as midfielder and probably just needs to bulk up a bit more, just to be stronger over the footy. Played in the State Under 20's side last year and is once again involved this year. Not sure about AFL capabilites, will be a league regular when some of our older on ballers retire though, long term player hopefully.

ALEX STENGLE - # 14, 21 y.o local lad from Salisbury North who, despite walking out on the club early last week due to percieved lack of opportunity at a higher level, is a very quick, explosive Aboriginal lad is very similar in both game style and stature to Graham Johncock from the Crows. Similat to what Adelaide did with Stiffy, Centrals started him off as a small crumbing half forward, playing a few league games back in 2006 but has since transformed him into a hard running back flanker up until leaving the club, had really been dominating the reserves side, along with O'Hara. Hopefully he gets a chance at another SANFL club maybe, he is simply too good to be playing in local leagues. Is really close mates with Adrian Wilson (son of Wilbur, played with Centrals until this year) who is now playing Div 3 footy with Kilburn. Alex is better than that IMO, as too is Adrian FTM.

LEE SPURR - # 15, 21 y.o who was recruited from the Gold Coast at the start of 2007 season, is a very talented wingman / onballer, with good skills, is courageous and hard at it but is just struggling to hold down a regular league spot due to quality and depth within Centrals on ball brigade. Probably just needs to work harder off the footy and could maybe improve his 1%'ers a little bit more if he wants to player higher up, consistantly. Probably not good enough for AFL but could be a consistent 10 year, 200 game player for us, but may also only stay for another year or so before deciding to maybe go back home to QLD.

LUKE BARMBY - # 44, 20 y.o from local club Salisbury who plays and looks like a modern day Peter "Milky" Vivian. Is a very very quick defender or wingman who loves to take blokes, backing his own judgement with run and carry through the lines. Played in the league side during pre season trial games, doing okay before a broken hand sidelined him a few weeks. Has been back playing well in the reserves side but he will probably just need to sharpen his skills up if he wants to step up to the next level and get into the league side.Definatley capaple of getting his debut game this season, if injuries to running defenders occurred, but is probably not efficient enough by foot to have AFL scouts looking. Has a younger brother Chad who is plays very similar to him and is running amok in our Under 17's side at the moment.

RYAN PORTER - # 46, 19 y.o is a very talented half forward who was recruited over from North Adelaide and has a great set of hands overhead but is also great at ground level as well. He can also kick goals regularly and showed this in the reserves Anzac Day game kicking 4 great goals from memory. Funnily enough I actually had a chat to Shane Shubert during the ressies game, who was sitting with his family before getting ready for the league game, and asked Shane why the Roosters let Ryan go ? Shane said it was another weird decision by Jars saying he didn't think he would hold a ressies spot, let alone push for league selection. Now Porter might not play league for the Dogs this year but he just has that something about him that you can tell he will hold his own at the higher level when given the chance, which may come next year out at Centrals I feel. May be in the eyes of AFL scouts, has that something special about him like I say.

BRAYDEN O'HARA - # 47, 20 y.o another Barossa lad, I think, who would seriously be close to leading the Reserves magarey medal to date despite making his League debut against West Adelaide last week, albeit a tad nervy and shakey early on in the game. A booming left footer on baller or half forward, finds plenty of the ball, bobs up kicking goals as well, on most occasions, he uses the ball well and is really hard at it. Will also be one to struggle to hold a regular league spot unless more injuries higher up give him another opportunity to step in, like on the weekend just gone. Probably just lacks a bit of pace for AFL but would also be a 10 year player at League level when some of the more senior guys move on.

ASHLEY DUNCAN - # 49, 19 y.o is a super impressive and somewhat underrated, very talented defender who hails from SHOSH West Lakes. Trained with Port Magpies, I believe, before having a year at Salisbury then coming through the underage system with Centrals. Hard running half back or centre half back who has been taking on opponents bigger and stronger than him but winning out on most occassions. Very poised and classy left footer who does all the 1%'ers all the time. has been recognised with selection the state Under 20's squad and he has actually become one of my favourite players to watch. Has a real possibilty of playing at League level consistantly and I would hope sooner rather than later, but possibly not until next year. Would think he could spark some interest with AFL talent scouts.

SEAN BRADING - # 57, 20 y.o from local club Central United. Plays as a centre half forward or tall wingman and has that sometimes freakish ability about him. Can turn a game off his own boot in 10 minutes, kicking 5 goals (as I've seen him do before) but can also win a fair bit of the footy as a running wingman who kicks the ball long into attack with run and carry. Maybe could just put a bit more upper body bulk on but certainly has a future with Centrals as league level. Has probably been close to getting his league debut in the last 12 months but he will have to work on his consistancy if he is to get to a higher level. Possibly flairy enough to catch the eye of AFL talent scouts.

I'm tempted to, but since Stokes was drafted later than I thought, Fairclough could always go down the same path. I'm not saying they are of the same class, mind you.

Yes, it was HAMISH HARTLETT - Very talented 17 year old from Sacred Heart College that has played only 4 games, kicking 5 goals. Have heard some big wraps on this kid and Westies are very pleased with his progression. However, and it's one thing I have NEVER been able to understand the reasons why, he hasn't been able to play for Westies LEAGUE team at stages throughout this year (and possibly late last year) because his COLLEGE side comes first ??

How can that be, surely playing SANFL is better for the kid and his development, I really don't know why they this ??? Saw it happen with Brendan Goddard at the Saints and Daniel Jackson from Richmond in the AFL a few years back as well. Jackson, from memory played an AFL League game with the Tigers one week and then the following week was an OUT due to his college footy team requirements ??? HUH ?!!!

More than happy for someone to set me straight and give me a reasonable and realistic answer to my queiry ???

Big Phil,

Those schools require you to always play for them first in any sport, all kids that go to those schools are made aware of that.

I agree with you, but parents make the choice with their child as to which school to send them to. This has always been their policy and it covers all sports with cricket, hockey, basketball and any other sport the child may play.

The joys of sending your child to a good school....

PAFC is Kirkwood any relation to Colin Kirkwood from Pooraka who of course are affliated with the PAFC

Kane is Colin's son I think?

(As an aside, today's paper says Kane is out for the rest of the year. Scans have found his shoulder injury from Lower's hit to be worse than first thought.)

Phil
I'm pretty sure he was Yr 12 last year and has obviously finished school.
I'm also pretty sure that if the kid is playing League footy (whilst doing Yr 12 at SHC) they
allow the kid to play at that level, but ask them to play in their big games
like against Assumption from Vic etc.
Not 100% on this, but this is what they did with K Cornes and M Pavlich who
were playing League footy in Yr 12.

Yeah may have been - just going from my experience thru SHC.
Saying that, some kids do get drafted straight from college footy. Andrew Mackie a prime example.
