5RPH Commentary

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Postby Sploosh » Sun Apr 30, 2006 10:20 pm

I only heard the final quarter - because of the old problem of the service not being available for whatever reason, but I am grateful for whatever I can get over here. Yes, the stupid "Sponsored-clangers" thing was over the top.

The real thing I hate is when radio commentators try to act as though they are 'special friends' with all the players by using nick-names or stupid made-up names for everyone, when people listening have no idea who they are going on about. Or when they get excited and just scream/gasp etc. Fine for people at the ground, but radio seems to have forgotton that most of their listeners are relying on their descriptions for information, rather than (unfunny) 'humour'. Why do many callers seem to try to be a "Rex Hunt" type of caller instead of simply doing a professional job?

This is a copy of an email I have sent to 5RPH tonight (30.4.06) as part of their feedback section.
"As I live in Sydney (NSW), I was listening to your radio broadcast of the North Adelaide versus Glenelg football match today (30.4.06) on the net. I really was appalled at the bias shown against North Adelaide, stupid comments such as "wild man of Borneo" (when referring to Nick Gill), "Tarzan" (when referring to Owen Weatherly), "sausage roll" (when a goal was scored) & also "smithfield clangers". Please call the game professionally & without showing bias. Believe you me, it is wonderful being able hear the broadcast of the SANFL matches & finding out the result within seconds of the game finishing. We (SANFL fans who live interstate & overseas) are thrilled to hear SANFL matches being broadcast after being left out in the wilderness for so long".

I will be very interested to know if I will be given a reply.

i think thats a fraction to harsh with nicknames as thats what their team mates have called them in interviews i've heard on radio, as for biased we all are to some extent & at least we have a coverage to keep up with games instead of waiting for the carrier pigeon to bring us scores or results so give 'em a break
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Anyone who criticises the job this Community Station is doing needs to take a good hard look at themselves.

I was disappointed with the decision to not allow nai and ca to be part of the Thursday night show, however, yesterday at Noarlunga their call was totally unbiased and accurate.

I was at the game and was listening in to check names once the light began to fade.

They even gave a mention to Darren Gawley in the last Quarter. He was a fantastic contributor to this station before he went to England to improve his already excellent credentials.

Phil Herden's dedication to the SANFL is second to none. DB is a totally unique man. A great guy who has been calling games for as long as Phil's been alive (Sorry DB.)

If people don't appreciate this great team, then listen in to AA whenever they rarely broadcast a Friday night match. At Norwood sorry, Coopers on Friday night Chris McDermott said it's 5/5 for the Port Magpies. Funny thing is they've only played 4 games.

Without RPH, we would have the occasional call from Life and the even more occasional AA broadcast, when it doesn't interfere with their commitment to AFL.

Listened into the broadcast of the Glenelg v North game today and all I can recall hearing is DB and his commentary on the wldman from borneo"obviously referring to Nick Gill. Please DB he has a name start referring to it a bit more. I'm so over your "wild man from borneo"

That's a VERY good point, very good indeed. They are streets ahead of anything 5AA can offer the local game. I think the 'criticism' as such is mainly about little things that just annoy a person sometimes. I have to admit I am over the "Wild Man from Borneo" bit as well and would prefer DB to use proper player names. Rex Hunt is a goose, we don't need talented callers like DB trying to emulate him.

I love the contribution 5RPH makes to the SANFL and am entirely grateful for their continued interest.

As mentioned by previous posters, it is good that 5RPH do broadcast local football. When referring to their nicknames, that is all very well bayman but when you live interstate you do not know this as we do not get the interviews here. Don't get me wrong I am absolutely delighted that 5RPH do the broadcasts & that I can pick it up on the net. The only thing is the stupid nicknames. For people living interstate & don't know the players' nicknames, one wonders who they are talking about.

This was the case yesxterday. From previous calls I had ascertained (I thought) that "The Mouse" was indeed Brett Backwell of Glenelg. That was until DB called ... "The Mouse passes to Backwell" ...... and then confusion set in. :)

I can recall making a similar comment (as Valleysvirgin) on FootySA a year or so back and being roundly abused by interested parties ad infinitum.
Noone is critising 5RPH's commitment to football broadcasting. Everyone here, without exception I would believe, admires Phil Herden for his work on a multitude of tasks which promote SANFL football and which ad significant value to our listening and reading enjoyment. Their loyalty to the product has been commendable going right back to the days of Ian Aitken's involvement..even through the dark days of Popplestone and Campbell discussing everything through the broadcast except the football...but surely we've evolved past this old cringeworthy aussie slang rubbish that DB dishes out. Noone talks like that anymore, thank god.I listened to yesterdays broadcast and could not help but be irritated to the extreme by those same references noted above by Sandy and others.
If you are involved in these broadcasts please don't take people's remarks as personal attacks. It is simply constructive criticism about an issue that irks listeners. Dennis Brown is a very good caller of football without the Barry McKenzie-isms.

If you lap up the praise, you must also cop the criticism on the chin. I think all criticism so far has been constructive. No one has had a cheap shot at the RPH crew (everyone has acknowledged their commitment & dedication), just giving them feedback on what they like & don't like. Hopefully the guys will use this to their advantage, in knowing what the customers want- how would they know if no one gave feedback?

In fairness to the guys, the "Smithfield Clangers" part is, to my knowledge, part of a sponsorship agreement with Smithfield Crash (and also being a part of community media, believe me, it is important to acknowledge these agreements! :) ), so needs to be part of things there.

Yeah I think that's a fair point, we have copped our fair share over the years with the site and radio I think anyone is going to have trouble accepting it in particular when it is often unfair and out of our control. You are right Punk, when you say if you take the praise you have to take the criticism all be it often unfair but thats part of the job. Being out of radio now I can probably be a bit more open and I do agree that two terms need to go.

1) Sexy football (Used again this morning)
2) Wild man from Borneo (most used phrase in Adelaide at the moment)

All in all I think the commentators do an excellent job, people have their own styles and I guess along with that goes having favourites and you are going to like some more than others.

I like the nick name thing in moderation eg - "Wild Man from Borneo". Was flickin yesterday to get score updates and kept hearin it.

I dont think its DB's fault he had to keep repeating it "Wild Man from Borneo" . One of the SANFL teams just has to find a player to shut down Gill a little and then we wont hear it so much.
It is what it is !!!

Thanks SturtPeter but we actually decided we didn't want to be involved again, having said that there may not have been a spot for us we never really asked.

RM - We all agree we were not Pro's and did it for a bit of fun, bassically the whole show was mostly set by the host so really our input was limited. As per my previous comments people are going to have favourites and people they can't stand to listen to, thats life.

I think youv'e nailed it Blue Boy, "moderation" is the key

Anyone who sees Gill play should agree that "Wild Man from Borneo" is a pretty apt term. He is an unpredictable player who could do anything at anytime, especially from a set shot.
But we don't need to hear it 30-40 times a match, we got it the first 15 times.

Same with the sponsors, hearing my Bloods on air last week I though the brewery had bought the station with the number of West End references.

Colour is fine & sponsors are important but not at the expense of the basics, who what & where.

Love the coveage, just don't over do it.

The funniest thing I heard DB say yesterday that the Bays should not be happy with the umpiring.....

As my mob were there watching and listening to RPH, we all pissed ourselves as surely anyone with 1/2 a brain could see the Bays had a VERY good ride with the bitches in white.

I must say Dennis Browne gives me the shits! I have heard the terms "wild man from borneo" & "tarzan" weatherley on the talk back shows on RPH but fortunately have been at all north games for it NOT to be irritating to me as it obviously is for others because fortunately I don't listen to the call unluss they are run as the Sound track with the DVD of the game .

However listening to DB doing other games his call after every goal "sausage roll" or "thru the hi diddle diddle" is bloody annoying! He was a dud commentator in the good old days of the SANFL and still is.

To think when I was younger I used to think Ian Aitken, Wally May, Max Hall and Ron Kitchen and all those others were bad but they are bloody superstars compared to DB and to a lesser extent Paul Blandis who is almost as annoying.

Phil Herden is great and he is accurate with his facts and involves the listeners with mentions of the crowd etc. Plus he is an old Cheer Squader so he has to know his football!

Darrell Smith and Paul Blandis refer to DB as the "Doyen" of commentators", well he is - An annoyin' doyen!

Hi all. Well I received a reply from Hans Reimer, General Manager of 5RPH in response to the email I sent last night.
"Good morning Jane
Thank you for your email providing us with feedback on our football coverage. I'm pleased to hear that you have been able to keep up with the SANFL thanks to our streaming on the net.

I can assure you that our team would not harbour any bias against North Adelaide as the guys have a great rapport with Roosters officials and players. In fact, we have gone to some lengths to ensure that the Roosters will figure proximately in our coverage this season.

I'm also pleased to say that last year our team won the Australian Institute of Sports Best Coverage of Sport Award for our coverage of the SANFL. Thi achievement was made even more special in that we won the award ahead of national ABC and SBS sport programs.

The Smithfield Clangers segment is designed as a tongue-in-cheek way to have our sponsors Smithfield Crash Repairs involved.

The commentary team is always keen to hear from listeners and I have forwarded your comments to them.

Kind regards Hans Reimer General Manager"

I was very pleased to receive this today & have duly acknowledged it. I just hope that the commentators will take a heed of my comments. However, once again, may I say that I am thrilled to hear SANFL broadcast on the radio.

Just as an aside, when I was in Adelaide last year, I went to both an SANFL game (Coincidentally North v Glenelg) & an AFL game (the Crows v the Lions) & I now know where my heart lies. WITH THE WONDERFUL SANFL Despite, the fact that North lost, the atmosphere was fantastic.
A North Adelaide Roosters Fan for life!
