CK wrote:Spell_Check may be better placed to answer this, but not sure how long its been since a club registered more handballs than kicks (I had Norwood 124 kicks, 140 handballs, compared to Sturt 209 kicks, 112 handballs).

Norwood had 8 players with more handballs than kicks: at half time, they had 11, to Sturt's 2.

Sturt took over double the number of marks as a result, 112 to 49.

Some other stats:
: Inside 50 - St 49, Norwood 39
Marks in attacking 50: St 17, Nwd 8 (Vlatko had 6 of these)
Contested possession: St 75, Nwd 62
Clangers by hand or foot: St 28, Nwd 35
Running bounces: St 5, Nwd 9
Centre breaks: St 16, Nwd 13

You'd think after all these years Norwood would have realised that we are far too indirect and handball way too much .... but we don't. I don't think we ever will. No matter who coaches us, we still deploy this indirect style of play.

The chief offender is actually our captain James Gallagher, and before him Brett James. But so long as they get the numbers on the stats sheet, people think they are playing great games. Gags has got a touch of the "Chris Judds" in that so long as he gets 20 touches, everyone assumes he is best on ground.

Who in hell came up with the best player list in the Sunday Mail, were they actually at the game? No Kieran McGuiness, no Nick Lower ... jeez

You don't need statistics to understand why Sturt won. They wanted to win, one helluva lot more than we did .. .simple as that.

I'm also bemused by the tackle count. Norwood 41, Sturt 32. Is that because Sturt had the ball most of the time? I ask, because Sturt tackled 500% better than we did.

I don't know about a lot of these stats, they have some entertainment value I guess, but they seem extremely rubbery to me. At least we don't crap on about inside 50s like they do in the AFL :)

AH you're spot on ... The hierachy and culture are wrong and the idiots don't seem to realise that if you keep doing the same thing you will get the same results, brain surgery huh?

Dale Lewis actually had them playing an honest, direct style with a focus on movement by foot, and couldn't be squeezed out fast enough .. No, the Norwood brainstrust in their infinite wisdom, will always insist on a style they think we are all about, and it's a rubbish unsuccesful style, but good luck trying to tell them otherwise.

Im sure to many that will seem like a knee-jerk reaction after Round 2, but I bit my lip all last season and for shitloads before that, and you can see yet another wasted season coming up here despite a reasonable list, because we play a bullshit method of footy.

Adelaide Hawk.

Stats are like mini skirts.

They give you good ideas, but hide the most important parts.

In the words of Detective Sergeant Nick Yemana, "Very well put".

I think one of the most annoying things about AFL footy (apart from the disgusting way the game is played), is the dependence placed uopn statistics. I think this has evolved due to the contemporary football supporter, a lot of who know stuff all about the game due to having never played it.

I don't need stats to tell me what happened, I can see for myself.

Back when stats started to become part of the game, I recall one match I kicked 4 goals 3 behinds. The stats sheet had my goals and behinds right, but listed me as having only 5 kicks. If you can work that out, you've done well :)

Oh boy, there is so much I'd like to say in response to that .. but I won't. Some things are perhaps better left unsaid. All I'll say is I agree totally ... and with good reason.

Have to agree. Take into account the players in the team that Dale Lewis coached, the boys played some great, honest, accountable footy that was great to watch. He had to try to erase some bad habits though which had developed.

And the powers that be weren't too impressed with it either.

good to get a win seemingly against the odds, good reports by those that were there that we played well, tackled hard and improved from last week as i was a bit worried as we looked a bit thin on paper.

good to get a win under the belt and always good to continue beating the deadlegs!

Wasn't it Lewis who pulled the pin for career reasons? mind you, that was the public reason given, could've been a bit more complicated than that.
No more excuses for Trev Hill as there has been in previous years. He has the material to work with now but the game plan looks awful. Forget the TAFE talk, how about some direct footy!

I believe he had the "Malceski" operation and early indications are that it was a success, although Im sure he would still have a lot of miles ahead of him to get through safely .. Don't take that as gospel, but I think it's right.

They've pencilled in round 9 as his first game back. Hopefully it will be a successful comeback, geez we need him.

Well done Blues!
Saturday was the first day I have been able to get my computer online for about two months. And the first news I looked up made me very happy.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Cheers Jimmy. Yes it is good to be back.
I don't think I'll be around the online radio much on Saturdays this year, not unless I am on holiday. Saturday just keeps getting busier here.
