Good point about the break and Backwell and Gibbs missing, I really noticed the difference without Gibbs.
With clubs relying on younger players these days should we really be letting them play in underage comps of a lesser standard to miss league footy?
I'll think you'll find that AFL want all the best kids at the U/18 carnival so the can see how the hacks compare against the guns. In my experience the top five is determined normally a year out from the draft as they clubs know who are the best footballers. However a bad carnival for a gun can put him down the pecking order e.g. Fevola only went 3rd round in 1998 because of some behaviour issues he demonstrated at the Adelaide carnival that year.
However a good carnival for a hack against a gun can get him drafted likewise a good draft camp can help get a kid drafted too
e.g not saying REBs kid is no good but lets say he lines up against Hurley or Gibbs and beats them well that demontrates to AFL scouts that REBs kid can play, REB can then start planning extensions for his house!!!!
Bottom line the u/18 carnival puts all the best kids in Australia in the one place at the one time so all the clubs (particularly the coaches) can see them and how they play. from this caarnival each club will list who they are interested in and if a kid gets three clubs to name him (it may be five I'm not 100% as it changed three years ago) he is off to the draft camp, two (it may be three) nominations he is off to a state based draft camp.
So for a kid to put himself in the best light to get drafted they have to go to the U/18 carnival...
Plus Trevena want Gibbs, Sellar and Hurley to play so he can win the bloody thing for SA....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
