Totally agree with the spirit of the article - I think most of us (SANFL diehards) have been amazed at the preoccupation of AFL clubs to select 18 year olds at all cost over 21 year old late developers who clearly would have the ability to play at AFL level.

Surprised that Paul Thomas couldn't make that list though - he would walk into any AFL Team's defence easily. From memory he would be mid twenties and would certainly be just the type that the Gold Coast could use in their first 3-4 years.
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

The other player i can't believe who isn't on that list is Scott Dutchke. Mind you when our own State selectors can't pick him can you blame the AFL clubs???

BTW I wouldn't call having NT Thunder "look" at you as an indicator of your success as a footballer. Only two of their players would have any hope of playing consistent SANFL Football - Jarrod and Cameron Illett.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

steve summerton from port was getting 30 plus touches in a dissapointing league side at 18 or 19 and was overlooked back then, would be 22 now and still performing on a regular basis only due to leg speed and height was over looked i would have thought but someone who continually finds the footy the way he does and disposes so well when has it would surely have to be in this bracket

Kirkby a chance? For real? He only get touches when he gets the benefit of a nice mismatch.

2 years ago Havelberg would have just about been the first on this list, but his injuries are too much of a worry now. Same with Callinan if I'm perfectly honest. AFL clubs will be picking mature age players more based on a lack of risk than the off chance of being a superstar. With a lack of high draft picks and limited places on lists, I expect they'll be looking at these guys as cover to come in straight away if they lose a few players and just do a reasonable job for a few years for them.

As previously mentioned, you would have to think Cockshell would be a huge chance to go ... Apparently he was very close to getting a spot on the Richmond list at the end of 08, and you really gotta wonder if he really could have done any worse than those they've played in ruck in that time (acknowledging that Vickery deserves time and should be decent)

Just going to throw Nick Liddle up there..

His height will be an issue, but his work ethic and pressure on the ball carrier is as good as you will ever see. He has been clearly the stand out player of the SANFL this year, and is only 21 or 22 from recollection, so he is definately not past it..

I see he has mentioned OHara.
He would be great at AFL level. Cant believe he's only 22, he plays so strong.

Brayden, I believe, have had some interest from both St. Kilda and Kangaroos in the last couple of summers and I think he actually went over to Melbourne to train with the Kangas the summer just gone. Can't believe he hasn't been given a chance, even as a rookie, on an AFL list, but no doubt Central's supporters (from purely a selfish POV) are pleased he has stayed with the Dogs.

Hazydog, please leave it alone !!!!!!

As good as Paul Thomas is at SANFL level, your comment that he would WALK into ANY AFL TEAMS DEFENCE EASILY is close to the most ridiculous comment Ive heard.
- Yes a few teams could fit him in but ALL is way over the top.

Sure he hasn't got blistering pace, but he finds the ball so often I am sure he would be an asset to a lot of AFL midfielders.

LOL i would have more chance of playing AFL than Jimmy Allan does now, too slow, barely can kick over 40 meters, shite defensive effort and use of ball is quetionable, handy at SANFL not even in the next 1000 blokes to play AFL.

Where were blokes such as Brayden O'Hara, Scott Dutschke and Lee Spurr.

There is no way mentioning Jimmy Allan as a chance is anywhere near as far fetched as suggesting a game between Richmond and Central would be close for a half.

Your probably right there would be a five goal difference with Centrals in the lead.

Remember the old Crows vs Norwood game at the parade, even they were close for the occasional quarter and those Crows sides were alot better than Richmond and Central are alot better than those Norwood sides.

I never said in a full blooded AFL game either, obviously anytime an AFL club plays an SANFL they don't take it as serious.

Anyway back on topic, Allan would struggle to get a game at Richmond. ;)

Of the older players, I think Luke Jarrad might be a chance to get picked up if he continues his form in his new role in defence. Would not have said that previous to this year.

Big Phil wrote:Read with interest this morning Mark Ricciuto's article in 'Roo's View' on the back page of the Advertiser's Footy Liftout...

He makes mention that with somewhat of a precedent set on mature age recruits in the AFL this year, his point that the SANFL can expect to be "pilfered" of talent is both a worrying one and reasonably accurate one would suggest. It was certainly an interesting article and he made some very valid points.

The likes of Fremantle's Michael Barlow and Alex Silvagni and of course the big 'Pods', James Podsiadly at Geelong proving players do not have to be under 20 years of age to make it at AFL level these days, I guess is something that we as SANFL fans have to consider the possible effect it will have on our competiton.

With the Gold Coast coming into the AFL next year, having already taken the likes of Michael Coad and Roland AhChee for their debut season in the VFL this year, then of course Greater Western Sydney entering the national comp in 2012, are we going to see more mid to late 20's players gone from the SANFL?

He collates a list with about 20 players (see below) that, in his opinion (and no doubt the opinions of many others, including some of us) are capable of making it on an AFL list despite not being teenagers and in some instances, have already had a shot on an AFL list with either rookie listings or training opportunites.

Here is that list of players he mentioned that should be on the radar of AFL clubs as well as a couple of comments he has on each them:

Mark Ricciuto in the Advertiser wrote:
ON THE RADAR:

Kerian McGuinness: 26 (Norwood) - The former Western Bulldog is one of the best tall, rebounding defenders in the SANFL. At 26, could play a valuable back half role.

Paul Puopolo: 22 (Norwood) – A bit like Crow Graham Johncock. Quick, can run from defence and good one-on-one.

Daniel Caire: 22 (West Adelaide) – Lightning-quick small backmen/midfielder who is composed and has good skills.

Jonathon Beech: 19 (West Adelaide) - Riverland boy is a ball manet and possesses a great work ethic.

Roury Kirkby: 24 (Glenelg) – Former Hawks/ Tiger rookie is one of the SANFL’s best lead-up forwards and set shots for goal.

Kane Tenace: 24 (Glenelg) - Geelong’s No. 7 2003 draft pick has enough talent to make it at another club.

Brayden O’Hara: 22 (Central District) – Wingman reminds me of Stuart Dew and a read-made AFL player.

Andrew Hayes: 24 (Central District) – Super athlete who can play anywhere in defence.

Ian Callinan: 27 (Central District) – Nippy midfielder/small forward who has a great eye for goal.

Tristian Gum: 26 (Sturt) – Highly-skilled half-forward/on baller who is good overhead and knows where the goals are.

Charlie Sharples: 21 (Sturt) – Offers brilliant goalkicking and strong defensive pressure inside-50.

Adam Cockshell: 23 (South) Former Power rookie ruckman.forward has improved considerably and deserves another shot.

OTHERS: Andrew Horne (South), Nick Duigan (Norwood), Scott Bricknell (West), Steve Summerton (Port), Terry Milera (Port), Leigh Treeby (WWT), Stuart Hill (WWT) and former basketballer Peter Hoban (WWT).

Very interesting times ahead for the SANFL and hopefully if it does eventuate that our great competition does have some of these star players recruited to the new clubs or into the AFL in general, I, for one, hope that the standard doesn't drop because the clubs at SANFL level still have talent coming through.

Can't really see too many from the Eagles. Treeby, Powell and Jarrad maybe 3-4 years ago. I'm a big wrap for Hill and he probably would go, but probably not doing quite as much he should at the moment. I reckon the GC would be keen on Salter and Broadbent if they don't get many games at the Power.
