Rd 13 Centrals vs North Adelaide Review

All discussions to do with the SANFL

You do have to outscore the opposition, but the team with the better defense usually wins finals. What North need to do is work harder across the board. With a bit more of a work rate you can help team mates defend better, stop opposition players getting time and space and create time and space going forward. North just have too few who do the work required IMHO.

Today North's big men were too quiet. Gill was ok for a patch up to the middle of the second quarter, but his ball use is just so poor. And it seemed few of the other big men for North really did much, while Schell and Westhoff were always looking dangerous. Especially Westhoff when the game was on the line.

Interesting to see Gunston playing on ball a lot today and didn't do too bad. Spurr was fantastic as was Callinan (again). Sutherland didn't look one bit out of place. I expect he'll improve over time but for a 21 year old making his debut in the ruck he was pretty well up to pace and didn't seem to blow up. Disposal and decision making in tricky conditions seemed fine as well. It's a wonder he left Glenelg to be honest.

All in all, dogs just totally dominant. As per usual foot came off the pedal with the game won. Next week's game looms as a chance to put in a real 4 quarter effort just to remind the comp what it'll take to win the flag this year. North don't seem to be progressing under Healy for some reason. Whether it's the players not up to it or the coach just not pressing the right buttons you'd think there has to be some sort of change made for 2011 because it's really hard to see North making the finals from here.

And what was the deal with the report? Looks to me like 2 players just going for the mark and one got there a fraction of a second later. It didn't look like he ever wavered from going for the mark until the contact was made. Didn't even look like he took his eyes off the ball. I expect it'll be thrown out, unless there was something in it I couldn't see.

Reckon if enthusiasm and team spirit won Magarey votes this bloke might challenge for votes most weeks from hereon, put in an effort and kept a presence despite the conditions being more suited to the smaller players - alot like Buckets in that regard IMO.

Probably goes without saying that his true effectiveness would have shown out in a game that wasn't soaked for the best part 3/4s.

Centrals won by 44 points, but the telling stat was 27 scoring shots to 8.

North were never in the game, with inaccurate kicking the only reason North were so close in the end. The first half was quite entertaining. Justin Westhoff was sensational, and at one stage both him and Callinan had both outscored North Adelaide. The dogs chased, won the ball, and punished North for their mistakes.

The rain really came down in the second half (the BOM reckons only 0.2mm fell today - rain meter must have broken), which saw scoring all but dry up. North kicked 3 goals in the second half, Centrals kicked 2 (and a heap of behinds).

Sutherland had a great debut, another Buckets in the making.

Finally, the report against Spurr was a complete joke and should be laughed out at the tribunal (if the umpire doesn't do the right thing and withdraw the report).

Was in the Dogs rooms after the game and he of course stood in the middle of the circle while the players sung the team song...

I reckon Pumpa had at least a dozen bottles of Powerade squirted, poured and thrown over him, he was soaked after the song !!

Some talk from within the Dogs rooms post game was that Pumpa seems like he could get a bit of a 'cult' following if he sticks around...

Shows about 3mm fell at Edinburgh (closest station, about 4km away) between 3 and 5pm.

You'd like to think there may be some compensation paid by the Dogs if he ends up playing there for the rest of the year, considering Berri have invested quite a bit of money into getting him there.

With the rain today, we're going to wring out his jumper into the Murray just above Berri, that should cover it :)
