How long is Sanderson's contract? If he is adamant a Reserves side is needed, then they can't hang around forever waiting for the SANFL to make a decision. Same goes with Port. If the Reserves side is so important there is no reason they can't have one in place, somewhere, for 2014.

True - they can have one in the VFL, can't they?

The AFL should have created a reserves competition when the AFL was created!

It will happen and it will happen next season. It is done and dusted, only contentious issue is port maintaining their zones and junior sides.

When the AFL was created (1991) there was a reserves competition ... but it didnt involve the WA or SA clubs.

Hoo ******* ray! I've been saying this all along. I doubt any of the parties ( AFC and the PAFC ) actually think this will be up and running in 2014.

I would suggest 2014 may be a year of transition to the revised model, whichever way it goes. I cant see all parties being ready to agree to terms, sign off and implement them in 4 months from now.

( Come October clubs are looking to next year already )

Agree there Booney. Mind you The Port Adelaide Transition model should be quite simple to implement. The PAFC is paying them, so off you come to Aberton.

The West Lakes Swamp Donkeys might find it a little more difficult but that's their issue. The way they're playing at the moment, perhaps their players might feel more success is coming at their local club.

The most important decision in the history of football in South Australia. Why the xxxx do we want to rush into it without logical well informed discussion and debate ?
AFC and PAFC ( or whatever we call you these days ) xxxx off and stop trying to railroad us !
The most important factor in all of this is how South Australian football can flourish and provide an opportunity for young men to have a career in football and for football lovers like every single one of us on this forum ( and many many more ) to continue to enjoy the football we passionately love !
Not every football lover likes watching AFL football, there is an alternative..... and THAT is the problem. The AFL don't want that.

exactly, we are panicking slightly BUT the clubs know what they are doing & won't be making any rash decisions, just because The Crows & The Power want it that way.

All that "we'll informed and ..... No, no, no, blah, blah, blah" is what gave us such, among others, well thought out schemes like the player retention scheme. A chance for so many SANFL players who were never intending to head East, the chance to make a major contribution to their Super funds.

The only people panicking are the supporters and the media, due to the media. Both AFL clubs and the SANFL clubs have been fairly calm and understand they aren't near a decision and haven't even begun the process of putting proposals to the clubs yet. That doesn't sell papers though I guess.

Brisbane won the 1991 AFL reserves premiership the AFL was created in 1990. Seriously The AFL should have kept it but was running out of cash so teams just affiliated with the VFA/VFL in 1999. Up until 1999 it was the VSFL and the VFL were separate competitions.

That's fine to put forward the wonderful record your club has had over their journey and no doubt it deserves an element of respect from the general football community, but does that give Port the right to have an unfair advantage over all other SANFL clubs, want their cake and eat it too and have been a drain to the extent that they have been on the SANFL's finances over recent years?

From a WAFL Supporter in Perth...

I have read your document & sounds to be fairly similar to the argument regarding AFL reserve teams in WA made by the AFL clubs here.
The so called evidence provided also claimed increased attendance at all WAFL matches against these teams would result in increased revenue however they could not provide creditable evidence to support their claims.
I support the SANFL efforts to exclude so called AFL reserve teams in your comp however here in WA the presidents of all 9 WAFL clubs at time where supposedly united in their bid to ensure this did not occur in our competition.

Despite this so called "united front" it didn't stop the AFL clubs approaching certain other unnamed WAFL clubs & encouraging them to break from the other WAFL clubs and do the "dirty" on all WAFL supporters in effort to gain a competitive/financial edge over the remaining WAFL clubs.

This behaviour was also encouraged by those who where supposed to be WA guardians of football here in WA being the WAFC whose mandate is supposed to be the development of all levels of football in WA not just to the benefit of the AFL clubs.

I think if football in SA is setup as in WA with the WAFL clubs license held by WAFC then the approach from the AFL clubs will be similar to the one that occurred here WA. I hope the SANFL clubs stick together and this does not occur as it did here in WA without the approval of the other 7 WAFL clubs who chose to keep their identity and not sell there soul for financial benefit.

Sound familiar?

Critical key difference...

Structure of WAFL competition is decided by the WA Football Commission
- 7 of the nine clubs were dead against the change but could only protest, not overturn the commission decision.

Structure of the SANFL competition is decided by the 8 SANFL League directors
- needs 75 % aproval (6 of 8) for any change to get through.

ie if WAFL was structured like SANFL than hosting arrangement would not have passed.

if SANFL was structured like WAFL with decision in hands of SA Football Commission then ... ????
