Was February for at least the 2 seasons before that too.

There is absolutely no reason the SANFL can’t release their fixture straight after the AFL’s has been released.
Let the fans and players plan ahead.

Last night’s AFL Draft goes to show how far the SANFL Under 16’s and Under 18’s competitions are falling behind.
Our SANFL teams would get embarrassed if we had to play against any Coates Talent League clubs (Under 18’s National League with Murray Bushrangers etc).

SALARY CAP:
Read a great article in the paper on the weekend and I would have to agree…
The SANFL would have to be the only sport competition in the World that hasn’t put their Salary Cap back to Pre-Covid level, in fact it should actually be higher now than it was before COVID due to inflation.

I think it's more the boys club that makes up the elite level pathway coaching that's the problem. How many articles have been written about player X being highly rated at the start of 2023, then falling away? Apart from Goad, and possibly McCabe, who was always a gun, not one prospective draftee has improved.

Time to clean ship at the SANFL. Bamford fluked it his first season when he had one of the strongest SA teams in recent memory (Lukosius, Rankine, Rozee, etc.) and has absolutely bugger all since.

Why aren't the SANFL increasing the salary cap?
If clubs can afford the extra money surely increasing the salary cap will improve the competition.

As was stated on here before the SANFL are raising the salary cap for clubs by 15k per season for the next 3 seasons.

Salary Cap stays down = less talent coming in and staying in the comp = less crowd numbers and members = less income for clubs!

With a 50% reduction in players drafted this year compared to last year, the SANFL may want to take stock and take control of the junior competition and try and get the best kids playing against the best kids.
No disrespect to the college kids but the standard is getting weaker and weaker year on year, so it might be time to not let the private colleges control what happens in the SANFL junior pathway.

I believe its just one of those years where there wasn't a lot of top aged, top end talent in our 18's, it happens occasionally, I expect that to change in 24 & 25

Far too many potential AFL draftees regress in their final year in the SA program though. Been happening for a couple of years now, the likes of Lemmey, Moir, Delean, Patton, etc. all either drop right down the list or don't even get drafted.

Be interesting to see how it goes next season with Draper, Welsh and the Camporeale boys. Welsh will benefit from being at the Crows, but if the others drop down as well, the whole U18 state program needs a complete overhaul.

What a great post. There should be more Henley High Schools let the kids develop at their SANFL clubs. Give elitism the boot.

One of the problems is that SA's population compared to the national population is getting smaller and smaller.
Even Tassie did better this year than SA in the national draft (talent wise) most probably just a one off.

I remember when SA had a greater population than WA. WA (2,855,600) has now raced past SA (1,844,600) and should be producing far more draftees than SA.

SA's population has fallen to 6.97% of national population.

2024's draft for SA should be a lot better than 2023.
