2006 crowds

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Postby Ian » Sun Nov 26, 2006 6:52 am

Friday night after the volunters and sponsers nights at Prospect there was a discussion about 2006 crowd figures. It was mentioned that a lot of clubs and the league were very excited by the rise in 2006. A valid point was made, this year we had a dry winter with very few wet games, and the lights were turned on at 'Lizbeff for the 1st time. Give us a normal wet, or wetter than average winter and what would happen to the crowds? The feeling was that numbers would fall well below this years numbers.

I'd thought about this myself Ian and I think you've raised a very interesting point ... Personally I love it when it buckets at the footy (just the way it's meant to be IMHO), but there's no doubting that crappy weather generally has a detrimental impact on attendances.

Exactly, I'd say that when you have extremes of heat and cold in the same season, it's bound to screw with crowds.

Any rise is better than no rise at all, but here's hoping for even better crowds in 2007.

Bigger crowds isn't going to happen, as for reasons discussed elsewhere.

I almost never bet on anything, but if they were betting on crowd increase/decrease, I'd put $50 on decrease straight away.

Agreed generally especially as we couldn't bank on another winter like that and the minileague cutting probably knocking off 100 people per game (that adds up over 23 rounds with mostly 4 games per round).
The only interesting factor might be the fact there will be more home games in 2007 as that might get more people along.

I was hoping that the SANFL might come to the aid of the SANFL footy show on C31, yet it seems at the moment that is not likely to be the case, if that is their attitude to promoting the SANFL, it is unlikely that an increase in crowds is on the cards.

I went by the Ridgehaven oval last season and was surprised at the numbers that get along to their games, so if the SANFL does see a decrease, hopefully the SAAFL will see an increase.

If I was doing a book on whether the crowds will be up or down in 2007, it would be:

$1.40 Down
$2.60 Up

We need to have a very dry winter again for the crowds to have any chance of going up.

Obviously game results have a huge bearing on the crowd average results but I also think scheduling plays apart with this as well !!!
