i think the novelty of jars has worn off, now is the time for him to get serious and win north a flag with the best resources and players money can buy.

if jars cant do it then he hasnt been a good coach at all :!: just average but a good motivator.

Ill excuse the pun there!!

Yes they have done well BUT they have beaten the wooden spooner from last year and another non-finalist from last year on their home ground, nothing really earth shattering

Let's not write Mark Mickan off just yet, good judges do rate him. But agree that Glenelg have seen plenty of coaches in last 15 years and few made their mark. "Freddie" had them going well for a while.
Not so sure about the 'weed', haven't seen much to be enthused about. his time is surely running out.
Sturt have had big money issues, little commented on but fact is that last year the club came close to folding again. Apparently the outlook is more positive now.

This thread has jumped the gun a bit. Sturt have beaten West (big deal) and Glenelg who had the bye in the first round (big deal). Plenty still for Rick MacGowan to prove. Mickan is a very good coach and he hasn't done much wrong going into his 2nd season. Both Sturt and Glenelg seem to be on the right track IMO. Westies on the other hand....I'm not so sure.

I was hoping he'd do well in his first role as senior coach role and always said I wouldn't be suprised if he somehowe go them up for a better result this year than last but even then I expected Sturt to go zero and two.
For him to get that list which IMHO is very ordinary compared to most others to 2 and zip just shows the sort of credibility this guy has.
Well done Rick and well done Sturt for having the nouse to choose him as senior coach.
Clubs like Glenelg and West really do need to take a page out of Sturt's books, they've got better resources but still can't choose coaches as well as Sturt does.

Your sentiments are appreciated Wedgie and I certainly concur with what you say regarding Rick, he is super impressive.

I do take issue with what you said regarding our list. I am getting a little tired of people suggesting our list is 'very ordinary' and other such statements.

Granted we can't, with present financial constraints, recruit big name (ex AFL) recruits like North and other financial heavyweights. What we have done is picked up some quality youngsters from country footy, other regional leagues and SANFL clubs. The likes of Ryan Darling (Blythe/Snowtown) who was best on ground yesterday, Luke Crane (QAFL) a three time best and fairest at his club Zillmere and Tristian Gum (a player you will be very familiar with) represent some very smart recruiting. If you team these quality guys with the top liners in our side, coupled with terrific youngsters and the fitness, discipline and passion the Sturt side is showing, you are going to get a very competitive unit.

We have the best full forward in the competition, quality midfielders such as Sheedy, Nelson and Whiteman and a really solid group of guys who will play a lot of games for the SFC.

As I have said previously, I know we are not going to win a flag for a couple of years but I am confident we will win our fair share of games this year, I always was and had to laugh when I heard pre-season predictions of a winless season etc.

Yes, congratulations to Rick and the boys. They will not get carried away with a couple of early wins against midddle of the road opposition but they are hell bent making sure the SANFL public stand up, take notice and give this club some respect.

Respect they deserve.

I would not be on here sprouting off I was you Dutchy.

In fact I would be saying very little so as to minimise the risk of sounding like a sore loser.

Do you need reminding of some of your statements last week buddy?

Just a fantastic day yesterday - We are playing confident and competitive footy.

I went yesterday hoping for a good 4 quarter effort and we got that and more. It is early days and we are yet to play a top 5 side - but i think we raised a lot of eyebrows from opposition supporters yesterday and gave alot of Sturt supporters that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Going to trek down to Alberton on Sunday and once again hopin just for a good 4 quarter effort
