Dutchy, there are "plans" to build an entirely new oval and sporting complex - netball, basketball, soccer, hockey, etc. somewhere other than where the Mt Barker $hit hole is now. I will believe it when I see it but I had heard that they where looking at some land near the effluent ponds!

It takes me 35 minutes to get from the city to Elizabeth on a Friday afternoon at 5.30, I reckon Mt Barker would be the same. Doesn't sound too far, IMO, to watch a game of league footy.

Seriously though, it's Mount Barker, 30 kilometres from the CBD - perhaps 20 minutes past the old tollgate. Compare that to the time it takes to find a park and walk to some existing grounds. We're not talking about having to book into a hotel room and stay the night here.

A work mate of mine told me that everyone associated with the glenelg football club are either Homo's or Lesbian's. You sound like you really fit in well there.

I live 5 kms from the GPO Mal - Unley is quite close for me - 15 minute drive. Norwood is about 5 minutes, Prospect is 5 minutes, Noarlunga is the farthest and I reckon Elizabeth and Mt Barker the same trip - therefore it wouldn't faze me at all.

I reckon some of the posters in this thread are fast becoming serial complainers...

I live 20 mins PAST Elizabeth, but will still travel to Mt Barker to see Sturt play, hell, I drive to Noarlunga to see them play, Mt Barker is closer !!!!
Depends how commited you are I suppose.
I think it sounds like a great move for the Blues, that is an growing area up there, there is potential for growth of the club there. As much as Unley is our history & it would be sad to leave it behind, I would not disagree with a total home base being set up there.
But, a few games at first is a smart move.
Adelaide is a growing metropolis & The AFL has destroyed the attendances & membership our clubs all had, our clubs have to look ahead to survive/prosper.

Mt Barker is one of the fastest growing towns/areas in Australia, so if your ever going to do something like this its the area to do it in...from the Adelaide GPO Mt Barker would be the closer than Elizabeth and Noarlunga and would be only fractionally further than Alberton in driving time

Can everyone hold their horses here for a second..................

Where in the article does it mention that Sturt would be moving from their present home of Unley oval to a new facility in Mt Barker?????

MOUNT Barker is likely to host occasional Sturt league matches within a few years but it won't be at the run-down Showgrounds Oval on Alexandrina Road.

from that quote taken from the headline statement in the article it implies to me that the new Mt Barker oval would host a small number of games a year. NOT an entire year as some people are assuming. So distance of travel for spectators should not be a problem as it will be only a hand full of games per year. South had a game at Encounter, West have one up the river later in the year and Port have had games in their zone before from memory I'm sure they had supporters turn up that are regular attendees at games

City slickers have to get rid of the toll gate and the salt pans are too far mentality

I think that if Sturt allow another team to start up in Mt Barker they would be disadvantaging themselves. That said however, if we get to a stage where teams are resolute that they do not want to move or have association with fast growing areas in their allocation, then the SANFL needs to seriously consider starting a new side in the competition as the WAFL did with Peel Thunder.

West Torrens were allocated the Modbury area, eventually it was passed on to Norwood, the Parade is quite some distance away from the Modbury - Tea Tree Gully - Golden Grove area. There is a good case for the Modbury football club currently based at the Ridgehaven Oval on Golden Grove rd to be the next team admitted to the SANFL to represent the local area.
