Have to agree. The Advertister is a joke of a paper. The "New Idea or Womens Day" of Adelaide.
Gee, I wish the days of buying The News on a weekday afternoon happened again. Could Adelaide do with another paper?
The amount of AFL unimportant crap at least always gets a laugh from me.
"the roo farted today"
"mark williams seen eating at a glenelg cafe"
"neil craig seen driving on king william street"
pure crap. :vom:
As we have seen with the crowds this week. People do have an interest in the SANFL.
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Why is it then that over 90% of the material on the Cows and the Powerless is done at the instigation of the journalist and not the AFL clubs? What is good for the goose should surely be good enough for the gander, should it not?

Because the AFL, like it or not, is what the majority of it's readers are interested in. They write articles to sell newspapers NOT too promote the AFL or any other sport. By the way, how do you know the Advertiser aren't being fed news reports by the Power and the Crows? If they weren't I'd want each club's PR person replaced.

As for the paper itself, I agree with the most of the posts and have to say I rarely read so don't get myself worked up about what they do or don't cover. There are plently of other media outlets to spread the word ...

Promotion of the SANFL is ... surprise, surprise .... the responsibility of the SANFL and the 9 Clubs. The Advertiser is there to report on it to the extent it's readers demand.

This argument ends up making us looking like the moaning minority because 5AA, which we bag most of the time, is apparently recording it's best ratings for ages and I think the week-day sports show is the leading drive-time show in Adelaide.

The SANFL is not some charity deserving of freebie newspaper space just because we think we deserve it. That's dissing the comp IMO, we are better than that. We have to earn the media coverage back not be given it. And the best way to do that is through a close, exciting comp with good crowds. Keep that up and the Advertiser will cover more stories because the general community interest will be higher.

And to all those involved at SANFL Clubs .... get there on Monday and get those press releases flowing .... :D

As for my "interesting" discussion with Rucci on fiveaa this morning.

Having been stood up by the station during the week (They were down to do the South v North game and the Sunday Roast live from the oval), to have someone from the station (Rucci) openly criticise the efforts of "SANFL Club Marketing people" saying he would like to know what they did this week so he could give them a score I felt compelled ring up and reply.

For the record this is the promotional work done by myself or the club this week
1) - Segment on Radio TAB (6.10am Monday Morning)
2) - Article written for Victor Harbor Times (South Country Zone)
3) - Article written for Southern Argus (Strathalbyn, South Country Zone)
4) - 2 articles in Southern Times (Local Messenger)
5) - Trevena Father / Son article in The Advertiser (Wednesday
6, 7, 8) - 3 segments on Life FM (Monday / Thursday / Friday)
9) - Segment on Coast FM Sportscap Program (Thursday Night)
10) - Coach on RPH Adelaide League Teams Show (Thursday Night)
11) - Captain on fiveaa (Friday Afternoon)
12) - Player / Cheerleader promotion at Centro Colonnades (Thursday Night)
13) - Invitation to every Zone Club President / Coach & League President / Secretary to Home Match Lunch on Sunday. (38 are attending)
14) - Full Page Article in Southern Boot (SFL Game Program)
15) - Liaison with Sunday Mail re match preview
16) - Organisation of Legends Match
17) - And finally the weekly SANFL stats report the Panthers give me permission to do which is used by almost every Media Outlet covering the league.

Still waiting for a score ....

Having mentioned the Roast not coming to Noarlunga
I was invited to ring into tomorrows show

Hondo, I agree with various points you made but the SANFL deliberately arranged Rivalry Round and matches at four different time zones to occur this weekend. They tried hard to promote it but it was not taken up by the media. The clubs can only do so much. If the media ignore all the press releases and other promotions the clubs do, what can the clubs do??

Hondo,
Please note the huge work which Phil and the other Marketing Managers do.
Also please note how, in a week when there was no AwFuL to report in the papers, The Advertiser's report this morning bemoand the fact there was no football being played in Adelaide this weekend. Surely, they could at least have talked up the football that WAS taking place, rather than complain that there was no football of any consequence?

PhilH

I heard you this morning that was a great call. It was good timing because, before you came on, it was easy to assume the SANFL clubs were just sitting back hoping the Advertiser would do all their promotional work.

I agree with your comments and those of Bulldogproud ..... you can only do as much as you can and if 5AA, the TV networks and the Advertiser turn you down well all you can do is try again next week.

But you are living proof of an SANFL club not waiting for the media to knock on your door. I hope everyone else reads this and sees just what is required these days and that the clubs are taking responsibility for their own promotion. Well done, great work ...

No I don't but I'd be prepared to follow it up, it'd be good if sportsbeat could perhaps get an online presence if they couldn't send copies I/S. Hopefully Chris Kendall is reading this and we'll see what we can do, worse comes to worse, if I find out the day they come out and there's a place close to work I could scan them. Sportsbeat was always good in the past but it really has gone up a couple of notches at least in the last couple of years. An awesome publication.

No SANFL whatsoever in my advertiser this morning (country edition).

Someone mentioned Wildy earlier in the thread.
I always loved it when KG and STud went on holidays so Big Willy and Bones could host the show.
They do 10 times a better job than the 2 regular hosts.

The advertiser's chief football writer (whose name I will not permit to sully this most august forum) is a clown, a joke and a hack. If the bloke was serious he'd be at the SANFL this weekend. That he uses the break to bemoan the AFL schedule instead of writing positive stuff about the SANFL is indicative of the guy's calibre. He must have photos of the chief editor nekkid - I can think of no other reason why the paper employs a no-talent bludger like this in such a high position. The sooner his sorry arse is sacked and replaced by someone who is knowledgeable about football - at ALL levels - the better.

FFS - if that's his attitude he should be cleared out of there straight away. He is the Chief Football Writer of the Adelaide paper.

Rucci really needs to get a life. If he's not anti-Crows, he's anti-SANFL. Best thing that's happened to him lately was getting dunked in Rundle Mall the other day.

Having said that, while The Advertisers coverage of the SANFL is minimal, and could be better, it's better than what the VFL get in the Herald Sun, which is no coverage at all.

Good post, I have no time for the Crows and can look at his articles on the Crows from a non biased point of view as I used to enjoy his input on 5AAs Saturday morning shows but he's seriously lost it in recent years. I went up to him at the Magarey Medal night last year (god knows how he gets an invite or why he has the cheek to show) quite willing to talk SANFL with him but he was an arrogant coward who ran away at the first mention of SANFL.
All he kept going on about while he was running away was about how his club joined the AFL and that noone in the SANFL mattered any more.

The Advertiser is a business. They have no mandate to cover anything out of charity, nor do they have any sort of resposibility to anyone but themselves. They are there purely and simply to sell papers and that's it. The more people complain about Rucci, the more they seem to buy the paper to disagree with him. And in the end, that makes him a valuable member of the Advertiser staff. The only way the Advertiser will listen to criticism is when it means they can sell more papers. How many more papers would they sell by covering the SANFL in more depth? Sweet F*** all IMHO, and more importantly in the opinion of the Adversiter's decision makers. If you want to change something at the Advertiser, then the best way is to stop buying it. In fact, if you stop buying the Advertiser and start buying some other paper, like the Australian, it will quickly become apparent that the advertiser is losing business to a rival should enough people do this. Then would be a chance to make some suggestions they might listen to. But if you keep buying the paper, don't bother whingeing. In fact I'd rather you didn't because you are in fact supporting them while you buy it rather than registering your complaint in the ONLY way that can really hurt them.
