You're not the only one puzzled by this HBT. Would love to hear an explanation...

Didn't the majority of the club's first playing list also play cricket for the Sturt CC which was also based at unley oval

Looks as though you're on the right track there heater31. According to True Blue (by John Lysikatos) the Unley Cricket Club was founded in 1872, then the Unley Football Club was founded in 1890 (playing at Unley Oval). In 1897 the SACA founded a new District competition and in that year the Sturt District Cricket Club was formed by Arthur Thomas. Still doesn't explain the Sturt part though. Why wasn't it the Unley District Cricket Club?

Interesting reading on that Thomas stated that the Sturt District Cricket Club would ensure Unley Oval would become the best oval in Adelaide! Hmmm...

For any Sturt supporters out there, if you haven't got True Blue try and get a copy. It's an ultra professional publication covering 1890 - 1995.

I had always thought that Sturt was named after the (federal?) electorate in which it sat at the time.

Now there's a scary concept... what would the other clubs be called if they had been similarly named?

From wikipedia...

"The club was established in 1901 when the Sturt Cricket Club decided to form a football club in the Unley (suburban Adelaide) area in the Division of Sturt (named after Australian explorer Charles Sturt). The club used the two shades of blue of Oxford and Cambridge Universities as its home ground, Unley Oval, is situated on the junction of Oxford Terrace and Cambridge Terrace, hence the nickname of "Double Blues". Sturt played its first game against Norwood, losing by 33 points.

Sturt enjoyed little success..."

We'd have both the Eagles and Port Magpies called 'Port Adelaide' if this were the case.

And in today's boundaries, we could have North, Norwood (and possibly Sturt) called 'Adelaide'

West and Glenelg would both be 'Hindmarsh'...

I know West Torrens use to be called the blue and golds and would imagine it would have been the same for most teams till logos became popular. Bob Hank brought the Eagles name to the footy club in the 50's, copying the West Torrens baseball club. I assume other clubs were similar?

North when they were Medindie were known as "The Dingoes" (1888-1892). Which was believed to be derived from the shortened version of their name they were called - "The Dindies".
Not 100% sure when or why North became known as the Roosters but I believe it's is from "The Cock o' the North" the name given to Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon KT who was a Scottish nobleman. He known by the nickname Cock o' the North.

North Adelaide being "the North" and a "cock" being a Rooster - well duh!

I've seen cartoons from the 30's that depicts North's symbol as a Rooster but as yet nothing earlier than that. That's not to say there isn't some. Some pre WW1 newspaper reports refer to North as "The Old Dingoes" or "The O'Connell St Clan". O'Connell Street being the main area of North Adelaide in those days.

Actually Purch the comment got "modded". I thought it was pretty crude when I typed it myself, so I am not complaining about how the rest of that sentence has disappeared. But originally I thought we are talking about how a team's emblem stems from its colours and the original poster is a "Cocks" supporter, I thought it was the obvious reply, but a tad crude nonetheless so I won't repeat it.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

North Ballarat (VFL) are also the Roosters and refer to the "Cock o' the North" in their history book.

The words to their song are also based on Norths song, just the words "Red and Whites" changed to "Black and Whites".

It was because of the Sturt Cricket Club, I'm assuming the entire area they represented was known as the Sturt District at the time as True Blue refers to the Sturt District Cricket Club and when the footy club was formed, they said that there should be a football club to also represent the Sturt district. There was already an Unley Football Club prior to 1900.

It's certainly not anything to do with the suburb of Sturt as a lot of people love to point out we're a few kilometers away from there. North aren't located in North Adelaide, Port aren't located in Port Adelaide, there's no suburb known as Central District etc...
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Back in 1901 I think the (original) nicknane was 'two blues' rather than the current double blues.
