Close, it was 14 years before it became a secondary competition.
A good SAFA side of the 80s would be competitive in the SANFL these days.
I can't see too many Champions of Australia coming out of the SANFL these days.

South didn't play in the finals from 1941-1963
Woodville didn't win a finals match until 1986.

That's two that come to mind immediately.

However, Woodville did win a final in 1986 meaning that they did not go longer than Central between finals wins.

Maybe not, but as a competition with real spirit, it is miles ahead of the sanitised AwFuL!! I know which comp I would take any day!
