But we STILL have not addressed the key area that has held us back over the last two seasons - some quality midfielders and in particular a fast rover. Until this is addressed I'll consider the recruiting a failure.

Is the Chris Chubb who is training with us the former Westies player?

You guys obviously didn't hear your CEO on Cunningham and Phil Smyth's show today.... Mentioned that the Club would ideally like another midfielder but that speed of ball movement is what the new coach wants, not necessarily pace...... Made a lot of sense to me..... And, if you class the Eagles recruiting so far as a failure, have a look at my Club who have recruited young players from a competition that hasn't produced too many guns into the SANFL comp of late!

Two of my all-time favourite Westies.

Good luck, Chris and Ben.

Chubby IMO was much more skillful than Grieger and was also a very good defensive grab. His arms seemed to go up forever and ever. If fit he will add a fair bit to the eagles backline i would think.

The way he went about his business on the field was the reason he was one of the most popular players at westies in his time there.

I guess we can think back to Unley this year when it was clear that Sturt on that day set out to exploit that lack of pace.

That resulted in a 9.7 to 3.1 lead at quarter time, and while it wasn't unbeatable, you don't want that to happen. And it did again in the first semi. For a side we once had total domination over by winning 14 straight in a row, we have now lost the past 5 against them.

I agree, wycbloods. Chubby is one of my all-time favourite West players. One of the very best full-backs and a never-say-die attitude.

I'm in shock! How 'un-Eagles' like is the recruiting of Scott Welsh!! The conservative era is over and we are finally being pro active.
It would be disappointing to lose Dobba but again, it would free up a large chunk of salary cap to attract a gun mid - fielder. I believe they have one in their sights if either Cheep or Dobba decide not to play. I sincerely hope Cheep decides that he really isn't up to it at SANFL level, cuts his losses and heads back to Vic.
Sad to hear of P Fiacchi's retirement, always gave an honest effort and was so reliable. Claimed many scalps in his career and I was so glad he got the 2006 premiership after being left out of the side in 2004 (or 2005?).
I hope Welsh starts pre-season ASAP as starting after Xmas just doesn't cut it these days.

As previously mentioned when we have confirmed information it is being sent to members by our email service - so members told first earlier today re Scott Welsh's signing along with Pete Fiacchi's retirement.

Chris our CEO was also on KG & the General - the second interview if you wish to log on and listen to the show - Chris did a great job giving info on the preseason activities.

Make sure you get to Oval Ave on Thursday at 7:30pm for the members draw - up to $500 this week. Lots of fun from 6:30pm and Bristro open for value priced meals.

Also great to see the SAfooty crew watching the first night of training yesterday - There are now 2 under 5ft 8in - the coach and me!!! - We'll be the roving duo for the club!!!!! Training continues at Thebby each Monday, Wednesday from 6pm.

Agree 100% Wedgetail...absolute shock that we would sign a player such as Welsh. Obviously the Eagles have done their homework but mature age ex AFL players do not often contribute a lot to the SANFL.
I always found Greiger to be a good player when at West and he should slot in perfectly to full back. My son had a bit to do with him at the SANFL and found him to be a sensational person, I don't know if he has officially signed but exactly the type of player the SANFL needs...even though he is an ordinary kick.
Chubb, I would not expect him to make it as injuries finished him a number of years back but he could be a surprise.
Westies players also really rated Scott Lewis and they expect him to play regular league footy at the Eagles.
James Stewart was far too good for Henley and we hope he can become a regular league player again...and take the kick ins. he pretty much covers the loss of Peter Fiacchi. I hear Aaron Day can play a bit, reminds me of where Grocke was at when we picked him up and turned him into a good player.
Recruiting Parry was a bold move and Seb Guilhaus can play a bit so the Eagles have certainly thrown away our conservative recruiting manual.

Seb Guilhaus was definitely at the Eagles training. Of all the mentioned recruits only Chris Chubb was missing (in Victoria), Scott Welsh had not been disclosed as a recruit at the time of the first training.

I think Welsh wil be a valuable recruit for the eagles. The only concern may be how his body holds up.

Parry, as an experienced ruckman, a contracted player and State rep would, I think, fetch more than 15K so there isn't, as I said, much change out of 50K, without considering Day and even Greiger. It's a fair bit to spend before you even pay these guys. Obviously it's not a problem if you've got it though.

It's got nothing to do with the salary cap, transfer fees aren't included in the cap. I'm simply making the point ( which you can't seem to grasp) that WWT are spending a large amount on transfer fees. Welsh cost you 25K, Grieger will cost you half that, Parry will be expensive and Day and Robson will cost a few more. It will be over 50K if you recruit all of them.

I think its been established that transfer fee are not included in the salary cap. Someone pointed out that the total of transfer fee could be high, all Mickyj was pointing out, the $25,000 for the upgrade of Sam Jacobs status would help offset these transfer fees. Thats the point.

How about my mob then..... 4 VFL recruits, all unproven, all costing $20K each, which is the minimum rate for a VFL / WAFL player....
