SANFL Country Games in 2008.

All discussions to do with the SANFL

my 2 c worth, there should be 3-4 country games a year with the costs underwritten by the league as part of their development expenditure.

Having been involved in coaching clinics in the past in the country the kids love it and if it is done properly (home club DO goes up and runs coaching clinics in teh days preceeding that game) a lot of goodwill can be developed for the home club in that country zone. Most importantly Australian Football is promoted to the market of tomorrow.

However the cost is prohibitive for the clubs to fund it on their own (as pointed out by CD) so it needs to be supported by the SANFL IMHO.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

good points tassie and on top of that, clubs need to keep following up in their country areas, and this can be done every couple of weeks or once a month/2 months at very little cost.

cant just go up there once a year, then forget about them until the same time next year.

So the Lacrosse scene is kicking arse up there then is it? These kids are probably glued to the TV watching the Crows every week and do not give 2 cents for the SANFL so why flog a dead horse...........I hardly think its an exposure issue.

Footy has been the only option for a while now so country kids playing it has been taken for granted. Wait a few years and see if the situation is the same. Soccer is taking over in the city, how long till that happens in the country. I wish I could have seen more SANFL when I was a kid, it needs to be made more accessible.

Why are you flogging a dead horse making your kids go to NA matches? Don't they just care about the crows? Or do they care about NA because they had the opportunity to go there?

BULLSHIT. So people that follow other AFL teams bar Adelaide/Port aren't real South Australians ?

Back on topic.
I heard that Glenelg have appointed a "Regional" person to oversee development in the South East.
Rushby or 1980 or one of the other Bay posters might be able to correct me re that, but if that is the
case do other clubs have the same sort of role. If so surely having a game in your area would only encourage
kids to want to play for that team...

Sturt have a great relationship with the Murray Bridge area. On db.org, some posters who live up that way have talked of sfc people up their regularly looking over the talent etc. We have the Pathways program in place. With playing a game up there in 08, this can only strengthen the bond in the area. I look forward to some great results out of these initiatives :)

Looking forward to going to the Bridge next year. I can remember heading to Port Lincoln (via Cleve to visit the Rellies) for the weekend a few years ago to see Sturt v Port, was a great weekend, and IIRC was a fair game of footy too. Caught up with the rellies and had a few beers, and it was great to see an SANFL game outside the traditional venues.

Totally agree with you Tassie, I believe there is plenty to be gained in organising country matches - most clubs in the SANFL have recruited heavily from their country areas. This is a great opportunity to continue building relationships between clubs and their regional zones.

I think so, but at the very least it's rubbish to call someone a bandwagoner because they support their local team.

As I have said before agree with country games 100%. Not only is it great for a player to get to play in front of his own district but with the drought causing these rural areas great financial difficulties believe its the SANFL duty to help these struggling communities. Every team plays at their zone once every few years = a nice little bit of $$$ into the area's economy through accommodation, meals, drinks, etc.
How great would it be having a game at Mt Gambier / Port Lincoln / Berri / etc on Easter Saturday??

So anyone who supported another country's soccer team in previous world cups then supported Australia this time round is jumping ship? I'm afraid the selfish prick cap fits.

From my experience, most people supported a VFL team for the sake of supporting a team in the VFL and not because they were passionate about it.

A lot of people stuck with that team and have become more passionate over time (I know that's the case for me with Essendon). A lot of other people chose to support the newly formed locally based club.

I see nothing wrong with either viewpoint. I reckon it's fun to give each other crap over the teams we all follow and the things that the clubs and personnel do but to rip into someone for why they follow a team is simply ludicrous.

My $0.02.
