You obviously don't have a son that finishes playing at 11.30 (if the games are on time), and a daughter that finishes dancing at 12.00 on Sat. mornings, looks like I won't be seeing too much of the magoos this year.

Nah you right he has a daughter that finshes footy at 12.00 and a son that finishes dancing at 11.30...

Found out yesterday that my daughter is going up a level with her dancing, start at 12.00, finish at 1.00, should still make it for the start of most games, but other than school holidays, I don't think I'll be seeing any of the 2's

Finally made the Advertiser today but the added info today was that quarters are going to be shorter with the traditional time on rule.

Im not happy about this as quarters were reducted from 25 to 20 minutes to accomodate the new time on rule and it appears we're now going to get 20 mins plus the old time on, basically 20 mins of football per match.
Might cause North to lose a few more as we ran out matches a lot better than most other teams last year.

Start time of the league doesnt effect me much as im usually at the ground for the start of the reserves. So as long as they start the ressies earlier as well then its all good. This talk of ressies games being finished early is ridiculous. If the game is meant to go for 80 minutes plus time on, then thats what it should go for...not 80 minutes and maybe time on in a couple of quarters.

So the old time on rule was what exactly? Clock doesnt stop for throw ins?

That was the old, old rule. They'll still stop clocks for boundary throw-ins, but will now only add time-on when the umpire blows the whistle signalling time-on instead of every time there is a ball up. The umpires will have to crack down on time wasting at ball ups.

SANFL switches to earlier game start

January 27, 2007 12:15am

SANFL games will start earlier this season as the league also seeks to revert to its original "time-on" rule.

The SANFL and its clubs have voted to bring league matches forward twenty minutes on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to start at 2pm.

However, the weekly league match telecast by ABC TV on a Saturday afternoon will start at 2.15pm, at the request of the network.

It's understood to be just the second time a change has been made to the SANFL's bounce down, with a similar shift occurring for two seasons in 1990 and '91.

"The main reason is that in winter, in the cooler months, it's an advantage to finish earlier," SANFL football operations manager Glen Rosser said.

"Secondly, there is night TV and night (AFL) games and it (2.20 timeslot) was impacting on people trying to go to the SANFL and get home to TV or go to the SANFL and get to AAMI Stadium.

"This will give them a bit of extra time to make the journey to AAMI Stadium or to get home in time to watch on TV."

Amending the "time-on" rule will also help this cause. Instead of timekeepers stopping the clock at every stoppage, they will only do so whenever the adjudicating umpire signals "time-on".

"That's the recommendation from the (SANFL) general managers. We've still got to advise the AFL of that change," Rosser said.

"The umpires will only blow time-on when there is an excessive delay. It is ridiculous, SANFL footy being played for 33 or 35-minute quarters.

"There were times (last year) where you probably saw two goals to one (kicked) and it was a 34-minute quarter.

"So what we're doing now is the commonsense approach. Ideally we'd like to finish the game by no later than 4.40pm whereas a lot of games finished after five o'clock last year. It was happening consistently."

As a result of the time changes, reserves fixtures will also be held earlier, at a new start-time of 11.15am, rather than 11.35am.

Friday night matches will still begin at 7.40pm and Saturday night games at Hamra Homes Oval at 6.30pm.

The league has also adjusted its all-important program for round 12, when there is an absence of AFL action in SA.

To maximise exposure, the Central District v Woodville-West Torrens match at Elizabeth will be held on Saturday June 23 from 6.30pm. On a weekend when the focus is on the SANFL this ensures no match will clash, with the other three games on Friday night, Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Meanwhile, Magarey Medallist Josh Francou has elected not to continue his playing career in the SANFL with North Adelaide.

"Josh has decided his knee just doesn't pull up and he couldn't give it 100 per cent," North football operations manager James Moore said.

"He'll come and see Jars (coach Andrew Jarman) quite regularly to help us out but he'll concentrate on business interests."

I really like the idea of games finishing earlier so we dont have to put up with watching footy when it gets dark early in winter. RE: Norwood oval

North would have beaten the dogs by about 7 goals instead of 1 at Elizabeth if these time on rules were in place!

So realistically, how long do you think quarters will go for now? 25-30 minutes?

Surely not much of an impact.

It will have a huge effect on those who play Amateurs, & then go & watch League Footy.
I could get changed after a game, drive to the ground & park, & only miss the first 5 mins- now I'll miss the whole 1st 1/4...
