There are squillions in Perth. Some South African Airlines Pilots even live in Perth and commute 'home' for work.

Figure bandied tonight for 40 people was 100k.
Get a sponsor, add fundraising, etc and it'll be less than half that.
Pocket change.

Also interesting to see a statement by the coach and captain on the official site:

2007 Premiership Season is our number 1 Focus
31/01/2007

From the Coach - Andrew Jarman

"Footy players are always going to be subject to distractions whether it be such things as our proposed trip to South Africa, a social event or whatever. To all our loyal supporters out there, we, the players and coaches remained extremely focused on our only goal, which is improving on 06 and making the Grand Final in 2007."

"I have told my players that their only focus should be to perform well on the Football Field in 07, leave the trips and functions to the Club to organise. My Players haven't achieved what they or I have strived for in the past three years, we understand the pressure that is upon us from our great supporters and the footy public in general, so we cannot afford to take our eyes off the ball for a moment. We have to continue to improve to catch the likes of the Eagles and Centrals who are proven powerhouses of the competition."

From the skipper - Darryl Wintle
"We must continue to remain focused on what we can control and that's having a good Season 2007. Trips to places such as Darwin and possibly South Africa are all a bit hollow if we can't win games."

Where the hell did you hear that dude?

Middle of Australia to Middle of South Africa = 10281 kms

Perth to J'Berg (NW Province) = 8303 kms

My guess at edge of WA to edge of SA about 8000kms

Sydney to Perth = 3291 kms

Thanks for sharing that but you and I have a lot different interpretation of "not a lot of different distance" :?

Wedgie just beat me to it........Borat honestly that was a shocking effort !

The South African World Cup soccer organizing committee flew 50 Journo's down there in November the hope of getting good press about improved security and explain all the steps they are going to take during the next World Cup so fans would not be thinking like Wedgie. While being entertained at the airport the bus now fully loaded with journo's gear was knocked off and driven away and was found gutted . Still safer than getting a ticket down the Croatian end in Frankfurt and us knocking them out with a late equalizer; christ was that scary.

From todays Advertiser -

STRAIGHT-talking general manager Glenn Elliott has strongly rejected suggestions North Adelaide is ignoring its own backyard by attempting to play a trial match in South Africa.

The Roosters are planning a promotional game against WAFL premier Subiaco at Potchefstroom, south-west of Johannesburg in October 2007.
Elliott says - if it goes ahead - financing the 10-day tour for probably 40 people would not impact on North's commitment to game development within its country and metropolitan zones.

The Roosters currently commit more than $200,000 annually to game development and that would continue whether or not they take part in a South African safari, Elliott said.

The proposed trip might even have a spin-off of luring talented South African athletes to Prospect.

"We get emails now from people in South Africa saying 'I'd like to come and play for your club'," Elliott said. "Everybody in the touring party would be levied . . . and of course the club would have to invest in it. We went to Darwin last year and we thought the investment in the trip was terrific for the profile of our club. We also see it as an investment in players, giving them a reason to stay at North Adelaide and the SANFL."

Elliott would not confirm whether North invested in excess of $20,000 to play the NTFL as a pre-season match in Darwin last year, which didn't effect its financial commitment to development in its zones.

A trip to South Africa would cost many thousands of dollars more but Elliott says the benefits would be returned many times over through the special bond that develops between players. He said that became clear after the Darwin experiment.

"There was an obvious benefit for our football club and I thought it manifested itself in a really good year's football," Elliott said. "Our blokes are as close a knit of people as you'll get.

"If this could be played in March we'd be keener about it. That's not out of the realm of possibility.

"The only reason we would focus on this as an end-of-season trip is because of it's football involvement.

"It's been our intention . . . to make sure we're better (as a club) every year and if this helps that, we'll do it. If it didn't do that, we'd have no interest in it."

The AFL is helping fund the South African under-18s team to play an Aboriginal under-17s side as the curtain-raiser to the Indigenous All-Stars versus Essendon match in Darwin next month, a match which prevented North from returning this year.

The South Africans will also play in the Tiwi Islands and Perth while the AFL will take a under-17s team to South Africa this year as the league pushes the links with it's major international market.

I thought he was a CEO Wedgie????

Well..umm...Perth is closer to Bali then Adelaide is to Bali.

Quickly changing the subject,

Funny story, I was having a late night bevvy in Perth a year or two ago, was a middle aged bald South African bloke at the bar,he was the centre of attention, about 10 hangers on were listening to every word, nodding all the time, and laughing when he was mildly amusing. I thought he was a boring wanker, and when he said something stupid I gave a little "guffaw". He gave me a filthy glare, so did half the group, so being a brave type, i decided to leave asap.

Next day his photo was on the back page of the Newspaper, he was (then) the South African Rugby coach, they were playing a test against the Aussies the next night...

He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

Going by his judgement of distance, landing the plane could be a bit of a problem 3291 km from Perth.

Costs would be well down though, they would only need a one way ticket.
