A THREE-GOAL, final-quarter explosion by Central District recruit Trent Goodrem piloted the undefeated Bulldogs to a fighting 10-point win against Port Adelaide at Elizabeth last night.
The ex-Sydney Swans player booted each of his goals in a game-turning twist to a rugged contest between the SANFL's first and second-placed teams.
The younger brother of singer Delta Goodrem, he had only one kick and three handpasses until three-quarter time but splitting open a contest that for more than a half never stretched beyond a 12-point margin.
With his side leading by just two points, he courageously put his head over the ball to earn a free kick and his first major five minutes into the last quarter.
Two minutes later he extended the lead to 14 points - the biggest margin since Centrals led by 18 points in opening term - and restored the buffer 11 minutes on after Port Adelaide forward Brent LeCras threatened to pull off his own take-over.
After a tight first three quarters in which neither side could break clear, the final term opened with all the fireworks missing from early in the game.
Centrals busted from the centre and James Gowans found Ian Callinan in open space to goal with 18 seconds on the clock.
Magpies key forward Clive Waterhouse - quiet compared with recent weeks - goaled in similar time after the restart before Goodrem intervened.
Exciting but wayward Bulldogs forward Justin Westhoff - who finished with 3.6 - could have sealed Centrals' timely surge on the tick of time-on but he hit the post from a set shot 15m out.
LeCras (4.1) menaced the home crowd of 6673 with a late goal to bring Port's deficit back to nine points but the Magpies could not make up any more ground.
Daniel Hargraves, who finished with 4.3, was a superb target inside 50 for Port.
After an errant start as both sides adjusted to the slippery ground conditions, it took until the 14th minute for the first goal to come, through a lightning snap from Trent Goodrem.
Two more goals to Westhoff and Callinan in the next seven minutes gave the home side a three-goal break. Hargraves put the Magpies on the board when he capitalised on a clever kick from Jeremy Clayton.
A goal-for-goal shoot-out developed from the 10-minute mark of the second term when Waterhouse played on and booted his first.
Westhoff answered for the Dogs and Magpie forward Kyle Jenner hit back a minute later.
The slug-fest continued until the Bulldogs finally prevailed.
