Ben Hart

All discussions to do with the SANFL

From North's Official Site:

Ben Hart

On the Comeback Trail!

Adelaide is an easy place to tap into the rumour mill. On what must have been a slow news day, many North fans were given every indication that Ban Hart was going to announce his retirement form all forms of football on Thursday. It was heard on a local radio station that an "AFL Legend, now playing SANFL Football" was about to retire, Ben was actually named during a 6pm News Bulletin on television.

Never pays to wreck a good rumour by checking the facts! It was ironic that whilst the rumours / announcements were circulating, Ben was actually on the training track in preparation for the Centrals match.

Whilst when, and how many games Ben Hart plays for North this year can never be predicted with certainty, his input as our Defence Coach has been noticed by all Rooster fans. Ben Hart is a person of substance and would certainly have advised the Club first in the event of any change in plans.

But that's footy!!!

I used to think like this Jimmy. But nowdays I am sceptical because I can't recall too many blokes that were of a fair service for their SANFL clubs after playing all but a year or two of their potential footy careers in the AFL. That fat dude from Carlton that came over to make easy bucks at Sturt when we were in our darkest hours is perhaps an extreme example of how the retired AFL stars can get found out in the SANFL. I can't remember too many really making an impact though. Except A. Jarman.

Hang on bud, what about Naley and Phillips. They both came back for very serviceable years, and both won magarey medals.

I think it is good for former players to return to their original clubs after the rigours of AFL level. It shows respect for the club you came from and helped develop your skills and make a name for yourself. The only time this backfires (and it happens often) is when returning players don't take the SANFL standard seriously enough, and find themselves wanting. Respect for this comp. is expected from all and sundry who support it, and those that don't are easily identifiable and deserving of criticism.

I'm sure Greg Anderson had a year or so after finishing with the crows.

Fair enough, I thought there may have been a few that did credit to themselves. My memories of them have been overshadowed by those that thought they'd come here for a paid holiday before finishing up their careers. There's possibly been a few others that deserve to be named for their service to their clubs when they returned, and I don't mean any disrespect to them. I just can't remember too many of them.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

I think Theri was more referring to players who only had a year or two left in them ... Most of the blokes on that list were de-listed with 5+ years of senior footy left in them.

And in the case of Motlop, Kilpatrick and Tuck, got re-drafted back into the system....

Killer didn't come back after getting the ar5e (or did he jump before he was pushed - I can't remember) at Geelong....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

A few players tried a late come-back to SANFL but found their bodies or desire weren't 100% up to it:

Gilbert McAdam
John Platten
David Robertson
Tony Antrobus
Peter Jonas

Sure there are some others ....

Ban Hart? Hmmm. Seems there is more to this than meets the eye. Unless of course it's a typo (surely not in a professional organization such as the NAFC!).
