Watts is a perfect example of the disruption I think is harmful to a club.

Mike Stevens was another who played a bit for the dogs, but rarely for the Power. Lockwood, Paxman, Schell, Ware, Surjan, Dew, Griffin, Giles are some of the AFL players I can think of that have been aligned with the dogs, and they were basically all either full time dogs players, or full time AFL players.

Just before a GF he comes out and says he want to go home. The eagles put in time and resources into him for 2 years for really very little return in the end. He was only 20 when he left wasn't he? Played a ripper against North in one final though, I'll admit, but all in all I think long term the Eagles would have been better off trying to develop someone who would be there longer.

Are clubs able to pass on a selection if they want? And what reaction would they get? Should we bring in a system where it goes on a permanent rotation? I think this wa the original model in fact.

IMO, AFL players are a pain in the arse unless they are born and bred diehard local lads (examples Stuy Dew, Stuy Cochrane). Very few exceptions to this rule (Brent Guerra the only one at Centrals I can think of).

You need to think longer smac - Stevens comes to mind and the young ruckman that is playing for the Crows was good for us last year. There will be more if I think long enough.
We used to be good :-(

Pretty amazing game that. The result made one 8 year old cry.
Anyone got the qtr by qtr scores? Spelly?

If we stay within 5 goals of them this week I will be mighty impressed...

70 points the margin was in the 2nd term.

Round 16 1982
Central 2.2 8.9 14.17 20.23 (143)
Sturt 9.5 15.6 18.11 21.15 (141)
Unley, 6218
I can also give the scorers for that match:
C.D: Wright 5.1, Norsworthy 3.3, Robertson 3.0, Edwards 2.4, Gillies, Krieg 2.3, Ruciack 1.4, Wilson 1.1, Moore 1.0, Trigg, Mobbs, van Dommele 0.1, Rushed 0.1.
St: Davies 8.4, Graham 3.2, Smith, Hollis 2.1, P.Heinrich 2.0, Derrington, Spiel 1.1, Motley, Pfeiffer 1.0, Zilm 0.3, Craig 0.1, Rushed 0.1.

Eariler that year Sturt came back from almost as far:
Round 7 1982
Sturt 0.3 8.9 13.13 20.15 (135)
Central 7.7 14.9 16.13 18.15 (123)
Football Park, 10269

I was 11 years old listening at home to both of those games. Completely elated after the Glenelg game, couldn't imagine such a result! But when we played the Dogs and hit the lead by so much so early, I still had the Glenelg game in the back of my mind, and kept thinking, "There's still time for them!" When we hit 70 points up though, I believed we were safe.
I remember in the dying stages, Michael Graham hit the post!!!
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

some great discussion here lads...looking at that dogs side, its tough to see where the weak links are or the breakdowns will occur....its really up to sturt to break this game open. The dogs are going to do their thing and its up to sturt to make them change their plan or adjust something ala 2002.

i just unfortunately see us sticking with them for 2 -3 qtrs then the dogs turning it on...im bracing for that....but i also have that 1% of me that is going to be pulling for a win. but im braced!!!

Ditto Jimmy. Any neutral observer would have put the glasses down already, and Dogs fans have every reason to be confident, and even cocky about this encounter, but that definitely doesn't preclude hope for a win by the Blues on Saturday. I'll be hoping for a win like every other normal footy fan when their team plays. I just can't see it happening though.
Give it your all Blues! Make them earn every kick and every possession, don't lower your colours no matter what happens.

Schell, Ware, Dew and now Westhoff have all been Central's juniors :) and came up through the ranks, so they know what is expected of them and know the blokes around them. Guerra and Griffin are the two non-CDFC AFL players to have fitted in the best.

I think it helps that they've come up through the dogs ranks and are centrals players to a large extent as well. But the best part is they've not been dropped every few weeks, then picked up after a couple of games like other SANFL clubs have had to put up with. Sometimes even a clubs juniors can cause disruption to the balance if they're going to be in and out constantly.
