Listening to the broadcast tonight for a while, I might say one thing - this may cause angst, and may result in another explosion on RPH during the week, with threats, reactions and all sorts - but Blandis is one of the worst callers I have heard of the sport at any level, and I've lost count of how many that has been over the years. These "funny" moments, nicknames, screaming hysterically, getting players wrong...truly ordinary. At least Grant Coffee adds some shade to the blinding light of the "great man" in Blandis (no doubt this will trigger off some fit during the week - hopefully there are no more blatantly offensive remarks about gays, Mardi Gras etc for it).

Small piece of advice Paul - perhaps listen back to some of your calls one day and see what you think of them and whether they are representative of the knowledge you profess to have of the SANFL. You obviously know plenty about the league - stop this need to put on a comedy show (which is generally unfunny anyway - and some of it is just downright offensive and very lucky not to draw attention from broadcasting standards) and playing to the gallery, and just call the game without the theatrics. You're not Rex Hunt. You're not Dennis Commetti. Just call the match please. If people want comedy, they can find it elsewhere.

Funny, how topical this is, I don't know if it has been reported in Adelaide but here in Victoria the theatrical and "funny" call of Rex on 3 AW has been caned in the press and in the ratings this week. After a crises meeting he has been instructed to tone it down and call teh game not try to be overtly funny, no singing (the fat lady) not sound effects just stick to the basics. The phantom calls that occur after the game have been canned to.

In short they have been told to stick to calling the footy, maybe Blandis who tries to be funny - but isn't - should note that by and large want three things in a radio sports call - where the ball is, who has it and what the score is...the peiphgeral crap just isn't required.

Maybe commentators who try to be funny should take head of that. One who sh!ts me more than anyone is Peter Walsh on teh ABC - peter you are not funny I told you that when you came into the rooms before the 1999 elimination final and guess what you still are not funny...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I'm broadminded at the best of times and am married - and I find very little funny in this day and age about blatantly homophobic comments, such as the little gem just then about "going from behind like Liberace". That sort of outdated garbage might have been funny years ago, but nowadays, it is simply offensive. I wonder what the station thinks about it - judging by the fact he is there every week, it seems that they approve of it in some way. Disappointing attitude. Thank goodness for Life, who seem to be able to call a game of football without screaming, making offensive remarks about a range of people and generally carrying on like a sniggering teenager who has snuck into the box. Their credibility and common sense shines through even stronger when listening to some of the rubbish "PB" comes up with.

I think the big difference in the coverage is the huge gap Phil has left, he really was the glue that kept a lid on everything with his non biased, non ecentric calling....sure he liked a joke but knew when to get the call back on track so the listeners could get accurate word picture of the game

Agreed. Smithy (now my favourite RPH caller) to a degree keeps things going along profesionally at times when DB or PB lose it but yes well said and described, Phil was the glue that kept things together previously and the coverage and shows are missing him big time.

We have to agree to disagree :o

Paul is the most colourful unique caller the SANFL has had the privilege to have since Gary Window.

DB's an absolute icon and whether it be Darryl or Grant or Johnny N, RPH is the one station I will continue to support both financially and in the public forum 8)

In reference to 5RPH one of the commentators, either Smithy or Blandis from memory (I think it was Blandis though) made one pre-match comment last week when the Sturt 67 premiership side were being paraded of the lowest poor taste I have heard on radio for a long time. It was in reference to Malcolm Greenslade. One of them stated that Greenslade was his High School PE teacher and that one day after school Greenslade came out to see his mother and he (Greenslade) chatted her up and asked her out despite their mum being happily married at the time.

Why would someone bring something like that up on public radio??? I imagine that Malcolm Greenslade would have been no doubt quite angry if he had heard those comments or been told about them later. What that had to do with Greenslade contribution to the 67 re-union I do not know?

Everything in life has an expiry date, no matter how good its been. Well D.B. falls into this category and is virtually past it.
Paul Blandis will never gain acceptance or respectability as a caller while he continues to carry on like a pork chop and continually throw in his cheap ordinary innuendos.
And before anyone jumps in and says they are top blokes- no one is disputing that, just their possible lack of professionalism.

DB & PB didn themselves no favours today when summarising the 1st 1/4 they said "havent seen much of panozzo".....maybe because he is sitting in the stand!!!!! then both admitted they hadnt seen the ins and outs for the game they are commentating on!!!

I head quite a bit of the 3rd and 4th quarter today and thought Paul's and Smithy's call was good, only fault I found was with Paul using the sexual chococalte for Biacci and using "indeed" again but besides that the call was seamless and I think Smithy and PB work extremely well together.
I think they're listening/reading as I think things are on the improve.
John Nankivell did a great job in the studio and I always enjoy his calls too.

DBs a doyen but Im starting to think its time he perhaps let someone else step in, I think JN deserves more time behind the mike and I'd love to hear Chris Kendall get more time there too.

Apologies it was Smithy not DB at Alberton today....I think PB has got potential to be a great caller, good voice and covers play quickly, but needs to get rid of the BS that Wedgie has mentioned

We're they???? I turned over to the ABC to listen to the Geelong vs Port Power call the other week and i've discussed my dislike for peter Walsh's commentary else where on this forum.

Just not funny Rex eave that stuff to the experts - the Coodabeens.

not knowing the ins and outs as a commentator is laughable and completely unprofessional. To be honest I find it very hard to believe.
