Fighting at the Footy

All discussions to do with the SANFL

As stated earlier in the thread, I think that the main thing that can be done is to ban the guilty parties from attending matches. Not sure that there is much else that can be done. Despicable action and it proves that all clubs have their share of idiots!

It'll be interesting to see what the SANFL's reaction to these incidents will be. Hopefully they come up with a more sensible solution than the last time they had to deal with crowd violence.

I also hope discussion about crowd violence at the footy doesn't get as out-of-hand as it did earlier in the year.

Like they say, the more fuel you put on the fire, the more it burns. Media won't help though. No one will say, there were 4,000 (whatever) fans there that didn't get into any aggro at all, only the two or three that did.

Good fun days at the footy don't sell papers or advertisinig space on the telly and no doubt the whole affair will be blown completely out of proportion.

We on here should make sure we are not also guilty of feeding the fire and maybe end this topic now. With user anonimity, who knows, some of these morons might be on this forum getting a buzz out of reading these "violence" threads. Why make them happy.

Geez it almost sounds like a complex problem but I've got an idea:

Get rid of alcohol from SANFL grounds.

Yes it will alienate those who like to quietly enjoy a beer and watch the footy, but to me the alternative is alienating families with children who will be the next generation of supporters of this great competition. You can't have something truly great without occassionally making some tough decisions

p.s. i am in no way anti-alcohol, i love to have a drink but i will happily buy a coke or an ice-coffee next time i'm at the bay if it means that this crap is brought under control

Understand where you are coming from Brent but why should the sensible majority suffer because of 0.05% of the crowd at Unley yesterday??

Get rid of the d!ckheads not the beer.....

Now I am a bigger drinker on here than most, if not all. However in the past 30 years I have had a drink only twice at games. A few tinnie's at last yeards Bloods Bonanza and before that, when my daughter came with me for the first time after her 18th.

I go to watch the footy. After the game (win) now thats different, but I am not gunna stand there and squaff beers and miss the best part of being at the footy.

As to Tassie quote. Sometimes booze brings out a very different personality. Add that to a competative environment and you have prob's

Nice choice of % there tas.

Don't ban the booze, ban the d!ckheads. Simple solution (with complex implementation, I understand).

Get real security guards who will forcefully remove them and start deterring them from returning.

Well 4/4000 is 0.1% 2/4000 is 0.05%...assuming the crowd figure of 4000 quoted on here for the Unley crowd is correct....

Personal Post

Banning as members clubs can do but banning from grounds is virtually impossible unless we have photos at all ticket booths and the red coats the power to say no entry with backup of security/police.

Needs to be in my opinion - arrested and bail condition is no entry to sporting grounds - then pushed right through the courts with a penalty that hurts say $1000 fine or similar.

No easy answers and if kept in perspective not a huge problem - but is an issue that we all have a responsibility to see tackled as one incident is one too many

I agree with Col. Give the culprits a $1000 fine. Name and shame them in the paper. Gotta be better than the slap on the wrist they'll get.

I dont know if banning alcohol is the problem. Doesnt stop the morons who dont drink who do nothing but antagonise opposition supporters. I generally dont drink whilst the footy is on (have a beer at half time of the ressies and seniors) but just because 1% of people that drink at the footy are dickheads shouldnt mean the 99% of people who can hold their alochol and dont act like dickheads should suffer.

STURT V PORT incident

Brawling may indeed have been premeditated.
Security guards were anticipating problems from a tip off before the game started.
The guilty party was a Sturt supporter who abused the Port Adelaide cheer squad.
He was given several warnings by the security guards.
He ignored several warnings and was evicted by security
He was allowed away outside the ground, but returned.
He was apprehended by security and with the help of bystanders.
A feMALe believed to be his girlfriend or aquaintance alledgedly attacked a security guard.
Security retaliated against the feMALe
Police made some arrests.

EAGLES V NORWOOD

Bayman and Mal were watching the game
An Eagle supporter swore and abused players/umpires on several occasions
in the first 15 minutes of the game.
There was a contentious holding the ball decision given in favour of Eagles
MAL " Bullshit Umpire."
BAYMAN " Thats not holding the ball."
EAGLE SUPPORTER : " Why dont you dickheads go back to the parade and drink Chardonay."
MAL." Open your eyes mate."
EAGLE" I flatten both of youse ..."
MAL " Watch the game pal."
EAGLE " **** off you havent got any clubrooms you dickheads."
BAYMAN " Yes we have there on Brighton Road, so you dunno whatcha talkin about."
EAGLE " $%$#$%%^%^&&*(())_(^%$@@!"

BAYMAN and MAL walk away
Im sure the little kids in front of us were impressed as were several
stunned supporters.

This is not pick on Sturt or Eagles barrackers
Its about any person being a dickhead at the footy

Wasn't there an incident after the the end of the last Port / Sturt game at Alberton? Maybe the "baby blues" fans aren't all tweed jackets and chardonnay after all. Seems that Sturt is starting to become a common demnominator in crowd trouble.

The other thing that can be done is that the state government can enact the same laws that the British government has to deal with soccer violence to people that are caught participating. If people are punching on in their teams colours give them a week in jail and a $5000 fine. People might them be a little more reluctant to try it on.

Brent has my support - get rid of the beer, and that will get rid of the dickheads! Then the sensible majority who don't need to drink to watch sport [or adopt watching sport as an excuse to drink] can comfortably take their wives and kids to the football. I don't think a few hours without a beer constitutes suffering - there is always water or soft drink for the thirsty.

Yep and let's ban cars from the roads and that will eliminate the road toll while we are at it. Seriously to think you used the word "dickhead" in your post and didn't refer to yourself.

Perhaps it might help if there was a visible police presence at the games .......
There were NONE at the port v sturt game.
The first two patrol cars only rocked up after 10+ mins; and then about 30mins later when most people had left (and we were having a kick on the ground) another 4 or 5 patrol cars turned up - too little too late .......

Geez - there's either total overkill (ie. 10 cops + 2 on horses for the port v centrals night game) or nothing at all
