Yeh Jarrad killed us, as always. Has he really only played 35 games which it says in the Budget? Why did I think he'd played more than that?

He only came to us last year from Williamstown. Spell_check will know this, but I think he might have only missed the one game (2nd Semi) since he's been here.

Aerie wrote:Very pleased with what I saw today. A fantastic first half and as spelly said, that was as well as we've played and as well as we'll need to play to beat any team in the competition. Just need to do that for 4 quarters.

Norwood, aided by some very strange umpiring and some ill-discipline from some Eagles players, made the score respectable in the last half. McGuiness was their best I thought and a very good move by Hill at half time to put him forward. Vlatko also came into the game and their midfield led by Gallagher lifted. However, while they have players such as Bailey (who must have learnt his footy from Brett James), Bartemucci, Culpitt and Jericho who blatantly refuse to pick up a player and spend all day on their own getting cheap and mostly ineffective disposals, they'll never match the top sides.

Luke Jarrad put on a show today. Afforded the luxury of matching up on the lazy Luke Jericho, he carved up. An amazing mark on the wing turning in mid-air to mark the ball and set up a goal in front of Dejong as well as several other brilliant individual moments had him as my best on ground.

Schwarze and Salter were fantastic in the forward line and Grocke took one of the marks of the year on the members wing.

The Eagles set the standard of what they need to be in the first half today and I look forward to seeing just how far we've come next week at Elizabeth.

I couldn't make the ressies today (Finn McCool held me up). Any reports on how they went and how those coming back from injury faired?

The seconds held onto win not sure of the score.Except to say the Eagles kicked 9 goals 1 point in the first quarter, was great to watch. After that they seemed to fall in a hole .
I would think passador may get a recall and perhaps inkster but who would drop out ? Not to mention perhaps Shirley may play next week.
What a game in the league today all I can say is well done guys .But you need to win at elizabeth next week (fingers crossed).
It was a great effort by Schwarze Salter Grocke and symonds in the forward line. But the eagles need to lift slightly in the midfield .

The first half was some of the best footy I have seen this year. I like having the three talls up forward who can compete well, take contested marks as well as lead. Schwarze looks a totally different player up forward.

Many moments of individual brilliance today by Flash. I recall a norwood fan on footysa, who last year after seing his early performances last year, assessed him as a "flat track bully" of the kind that caused our lack of GF success.

With Passa kicking 8 Goals in the Reserves and Schwarze kicking 7 and Salter 5, would anyone have Passa back in the League team next week?

Have him in the forward pocket bet the dogs have their best defender on him.

The versatility of Grocke, Salter and Schwarze should allow Passador to play a role in the forward line alongside them.

I think a forward pocket would be a good spot for Passador, alongside Schwarze with Salter and Grocke across half forward.

Symmons can be the floating forward/crumber and I'd be tempted to tag Thomas using Sam Fairclough. I was impressed with Fairclough yesterday and think he has the smarts to play an important defensive role in our forward line and still be dangerous enough to bob up with a couple of goals.

If we play Passa next week, are we going too tall in the forward line??

If it aint broke dont fix it.

Although he can play forward and back, so would be handy on the bench if we don't want to upset forward structure.

Would not like to see the current three tall forward setup changed. They all add something different. Passador and Schwarze are similar type players.

The Eagles defence setup is not at all tall, Giuffreda (6'2"), Pedler (6'2"),
and Hier (6'1"). I think Passador will be looked at in a tall defensive position............then there is always the swap between Pas and Schwarze.

It was good to see the leash let off Fairclough on Saturday. I felt uncomfortable with the pressure as a 16, 17 & 18 yo he has had to bear each week as a tagger. His pace, chase and hardness around the ground while picking up touches was good to see.

I've been amazed at James Stewarts self control while playing in the league team but he cracked on Saturday doing a dumb action which was all to much a part of his game in the reserves. Could be a really good league player if he becomes disciplined.

Over the past few weeks the gradual build up of intensity in the Eagles game has been good to watch, I feel they have a better balanced team than in 2006 but the want to win has to be shown to be considered a better team.

Ferrett, very good points you made once again. In comparison to last year I believe our forward line is actually performing better and not so one dimensional & I will like to see the current stucture maintained. I believe that our midfield is not quite as potent as last year but they are building and are close to the required mark. Our defence is not as good as last year given the lack of experience in the ranks but they have done well in the last month and when we slot back McKenzie and maybe Passadore and Coleville we should further reduce the oppositions scoring power.

Well done to the Eagles ... I gotta say that whilst rolling my eyes at the dribble we continue to offer up, I was ultra impressed with the Eagles, who really appear to have only the one task left to confront (recovering full fitness across the board) to be RIGHT around the money this year.

Their workrate and constant harassment in the first half was first class, and will always tear apart a rabble mob like ours who play "Hot Potato" footy when under pressure.

Luke Jarrad is a star, one of the best individual performances this year and he just oozes class ... Whats his background? I read somewhere here that he's from Williamstwon previously - How old and what chance he could be drafted this year?

Aerie - Can't argue with your call on the umps, we certainly received a much better run in the 2nd half than the first ... I'm sure the buggers check the stats or something at the breaks becaue whenever a team cops the rougher end of the stick early, they can generally expect the better run in the next half (happened just 2 weeks ago at the Bay).

My memory is a little scratchy, but I think the story went along the lines of him wanting to play SANFL to give himself a chance to make AFL and he sent a presentation of himself to all 9 clubs. The Eagles picked him up. He did play at Williamstown.

To be honest, he looked dreadful in his first few games last year. He showed some good signs in last year's ANZAC Day match and hasn't looked back. Has developed some hardness to his game under Fuller, which has definitely made him a more complete player.

He was exactly the type of player the Eagles needed. Someone smart who plays a little outside with a penetrating and accurate kick.

He's 23 and I see no reason why he wouldn't make a good AFL player. Have seen players such as Campbell and Stokes be given opportunities as late starters, so who knows?

Eagles had 21 frees in the second half to lead the tally 32-21 at full time.

Where exactly did you find an issue with the umpiring?

I read somewhere or heard that the EAGLES were the only club interested in him .He certainly is the type of the player the EAGLES needed last year. And the year before I think he was a ball magnet in the VFL.
And you are correct AERIE about his first few league games it took him until the first time the EAGLES played Centrals last year for him to get it right. This seems to be a common thing for ex VFL footballers playing in the SANFL.
