Must admit I have no idea why Squawk, I can't understand why both West v Port and especially Norwood v South wasn't moved to the Sunday, perhaps those clubs don't want to stretch out the season any longer than they have to?

Mind you I just checked the Souther Football League's finals program this week and they have one game on the Saturday (Happy Valley v Brighton) and one on the Sunday (Cove v Port Noarlunga) so there's not much difference there, Happy Valley and Brighton aren't even in South's area so perhaps that's why they went with the Saturday game?

South has gone to great lengths to promote Sunday games to enable it to attract community footballers to the games from the great southern league and has publicly spruiked its successes. Hey, its a great approach. Come the final round though and their last home game is scheduled for the Saturday.... What the? Oh, and let me guess, who do most Nwd and South fans barrack for in the AFL? Yeah, the Crows, who are scheduled to play on Sat afternoon. I just cant work out the reasoning. The only thing I can think of is that given the two clubs are not in the finals, they just want to get the game over with and out of the way so they can start thinking about the 2008 season.

Yes, well you may have to get in touch with the NFC and SAFC to find out the real answer, cause that decision has no reasoning behind it. Except maybe for your last comment, but come on guys...

To answer the question about the last sub 1000 crowd, it was in Round 21 1999, when 950 was at Noarlunga to see South and Central.

Honestly tho how many extra people would attend the Norwood/South and Port/West games if they were played on Sunday? How many bums on seats are we really talking about here? Not as many as we would like to think unfortunately. All teams have no finals prospects it's mostly just the die-hards a lot of who will go Sat anyway. Sat ties in with their after match functions and the loss of revenue from that would prob offset the small reduction in already small crowds compared to who might go on Sunday.

A lot of people will watch the Geelong/Kangaroos on Sunday anyway. Not as many as the Crows I accept but this round of AFL finals (4) will always kill it for the SANFL. It gets easier from here as the Sundays clear up for us!

Hondo - if South have played their home games on Sundays, how does a Sat game tie in with their after match presentations?

One game had to be done on a Sat for ABC TV. As BPRRB suggested, Port vs West might have sewn that one up. As for the rest, why go up against two Adelaide based AFL teams? Sure the difference in crowd nos may not have been huge but I don't think it was unreasonable to anticipate South v Nwd on the Sunday UNLESS the AFL programming compromised this?

The SANFL release suggested home clubs were given first choice and that Finals clubs wanted to play as early as possible. The only problem is that this premise does not stack up with the resultant programming outcomes.

I'm flummoxed. Anyone got a copy of the SANFL's running sheet?

I have...

1 - Sturt and North request Friday night, SANFL too scared to say no in case North vent their anger on their website again.
2 - Eagles and Glenelg forced to play Saturday so they don't give two days advantage to their finals rivals.
3 - Other clubs request Saturday games so they can get on the piss quicker.
4 - Clubs and the league consider fans for a moment, but decide to install air conditioning instead.
5 - Media release

The players of one or both sides are just going to love the atmosphere at Noarlunga when they hear a roar from a packed upstairs and look up to see a see of "backs".

What a joke - here is South a big promoter of Sunday Football and they cave in this week - surely they were not dumb enough to have requested a Sat. game despite it being last game of the year. Maybe the club's requests were for their players so they could get on the piss a day earlier. Personally speaking South should not be giving their players any concessions for anything given the poor on and and off field issues this year.

I agree, great idea

Given the circumstances, 10/10 for thinking IMO. Use the popularity of the Crows match to their advantage. Be interesting to see how it goes.

Good work Phil and the SAFC. Will the Eagles have something similar? If they are, I'll probably bring some people to the game with me, if not, there's no chance they'll come.

South and Norwood will play their game in front of 150 supporters, while the other 900 watch the Cows on the big screen, spending plenty over the bar in the function centre, their players will love all of the support they don't get that day  .
