all well prior to any merger
It took the best of what both had to offer
- the history of the Eagles nickname
- the superior facilities at Woodville (remember at the time of Merger Torrens has a loss making social club, bingo whilst Woodville's was profitable)
I was under the impression the combined club could make more money from selling the club rooms West Torrens fully owned at Thebarton and that was the main reason Woodville was chosen.
And I'm not sure West Torrens playing home games out of Footy Park in 1989 was because Thebby was (or wasn't as you have put it) "such a great oval"
It was an era where clubs were centralising locations as almost all the AFL clubs are doing now (and some were doing back then). South and Sturt were at Adelaide Oval as well.
I have no problems with Woodville Oval. The grassy hills are great with the low crowds we now get to games. The club rooms overlooking the oval from the northern end are sensational. It's a great place to have as the home of the club I'll always support. However, having a couple of home games at Thebby each year has meant a hell of a lot to a lot of people and Thebarton Oval has that
real league football atmosphere and history that Woodville doesn't generate. The stands are in a much better location (and look better) than Woodville.
I think the Eagles are lucky to have Woodville Oval as their home and Thebby as their 2nd home. I hope it is always that way and our club, which is one club, but has a shared history, always remains strong.
