Bulldogs are back

06may06

FIERCE and focused Central District forced North Adelaide to crash back to reality with a thumping 68-point win, putting the competition on notice at Adelaide Oval last night.

Central recaptured its trademark toughness – at least for a moment – to apply an impressive 67 effective tackles for the night to North's 31. The Dogs transformed into fearsome pit bulldogs in their attack on the previously unbeaten Roosters, who dared to imagine they could take the mantle of league pacesetter from Central. The powerful performance delighted the Dogs faithful, who broke into the legendary tribal chants for the first time this season – but the win should have been far more devastating.

Central missed at least 10 shots at goal from inside 45 metres – six by Daniel Schell (5.6) and nine by Luke Cowan (1.3) – which, if slotted, would have totally embarrassed the flat and listless Roosters.

The gang-tacking Dogs gave the formerly high-flying Roosters a hiding in every aspect of the game from the start of the second term and kicked 15.15 to just 7.7 after the first break. Playing its third game in just 10 days after competing on Anzac Day, Central smashed the usually smooth-moving and confident Roosters into a bumbling mess by 10 minutes into the second quarter. The Dogs led then by just 18 points but they were infinitely more aggressive and cleaner with every touch. James Gowans (17 damaging touches for the first half and 29 disposals and five tackles for the night), Cowan, Matt Slade, Chad O'Sullivan and exciting Leigh Westhoff (4.0), who thrashed Leigh Ryswyk on a wing, and his brother Justin (3.0) did the damage in the defining first half.

The Dogs' only regret is that they have a bye next week just when they have hit form.

North was struggling before half-time with Josh Francou (hip) and Brett White (hamstring) already scratchings and Owen Weatherley (calf) – who played out the second half – off the ground and skipper Darryl Wintle limping. Wintle, in his 150th game, lasted 10 minutes into the third term.

Star forward Nick Gill, who passed a fitness test in the morning on a strained neck to play, had just one touch in the first half, then went into defence to try to quell high-leaping Cowan after the main break.

RESERVES

Central District 4.1 7.2 8.7 13.9 (87)

North Adelaide 4.6 7.9 10.10 12.14 (86)

BEST – Central: Agars, Stengle, A. Obst, O'Hara, Hudson, Rogers, Hayes, C. Obst. North: Moritz, Cunningham, McGahey, Gregov, Pfeiffer, Baker.

GOALS – Central: Agars 5, Britton 2, Stengle, A. Obst, Officer, Capogreco, Hudson, O'Hara. North: Gragov, Wundke 3, McEntee 2, Pfeiffer, Edwards, T. Motlop, Ebert.

I reckon a few people don't credit Jars for the genius he truly is.
We didn't have any injuries tonight but playing 1 short in the 2nd half meant there was 1 less player Centrals could tackle!
It would have been over 70 otherwise!

Good one Wedgie. One positive about this game for North, especially for their supporters that were talking premierships, their heads have come back down for the clouds now and the reality is that a hell of alot more work is required. You needed this alot more than you realise.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

The compelling stat is 67 effective tackles to norths 31

North will not and cannot win the flag until they develop a stronger defensive game, not many finals are played in a free flowing end to end non contact shoot out

You need to be able to kick a score but you need a strong defensive action, footy is two ways not just running one way towards goals

What an effort 3 more inclusions Cochrane, Currie and Cowan now with Schelly, Cowan and the new kid Westoff No. 23 (he sure has some football nous ) we at last now have a forward line which has been missing for most of our games.

Tackling superb, we can only get better !!!!!

Disappointing crowd numbers though !!
SANFL 2000 - 2011 Central District 12 consecutive Grand Final appearances and 9 Premierships.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFF.

Hit em hard let them get up and hit em again.

I thought both the Westhoff lads were sensational last night, just when the Gowens lads are getting on in age along come another set of brothers at Elizabeth to torment opposition sides!

Absolutely brilliant to watch. North could'nt get out of 1st gear. Pressured in just about every contest.
Shows what the Bulldogs are capable of when they put their minds to it. Just keep doing for the rest of the year!

A fine performance by the Dogs. The pressure placed on North's midfield is where it was won. What impresses me the most is that it is the young kids with not many games who are standing out, Wilson, O'Sullivan, Currie and the Westhoff boys all performed well.

How many times do we have to go through this? Apart from Railcar Robbo I have yet to read a post from a North supporter talking up our premiership chances on any forum so correct me if I am wrong (maybe one or two have slipped through) but all the regular North contributors on thse forums have been talking our chances down based on the reasoning of last nights effort for starters.

We haven't been able to handle the pressure against the dogs who are still the team to beat along with Port. All the hype about Premiership favourites etc has been from supporters of other teams and media people who have been "bluffed" by our high scoring start. North still have along way to go. The only confidence shown by North fans that with our list - a full and fit list, we would have to be a chance for a top 3 finish. That is the only expctation at North re this season. We have to make the finals first and get the double chance before we start back slapping and talking GF's.

Let's see how North go against sides like Centrals and Port when we have a full list to pick from?

Let's see how you go when we get back Chris Gowans, Steinberner, Swooper Switala, Richard Cochrane, Brad Symes..shall I go on? Also, let's see how you go when we haven't played 3 games in 10 days. Enuff sed, me thinks.

Richard Cochrane, should be right to go next week, Switala must only be only a week or two away

The positive out of these injuries is O'Sullivan has spent plenty of time on the ball, and we have blooded Northsworthy and Leigh and Justin Westhoff, this will stand the club in good for the remaining of the season and the march towards the finals
